Dragging a file across windows holds your mouse hostage. Shake mid-drag and a shelf appears by the cursor — drop it there, find your window, drag it out when ready.
Dragging a file from one window to another means holding your mouse hostage. You cannot switch spaces, scroll a folder, or open the window you were aiming for without losing what you picked up.
Shakelf fixes exactly that, and nothing else.
Start dragging anything, shake the mouse left and right, and a shelf appears right where your cursor is. Drop the file and the drag is over. Now take your time: open the folder, switch spaces, scroll the page, answer a message. When you are ready, drag the file out of the shelf and into wherever it belongs.
WHAT A SHELF HOLDS
• Files from Finder
• Images dragged straight out of a web page
• Screenshots waiting in your clipboard
• Plain text and links
Raw images are saved as real PNG files, so they behave like anything else you drag.
TAKE THINGS BACK OUT
Pull items out one at a time, or grab the shelf's header and take the whole stack in a single drag. A shelf that runs empty closes itself and drops into Recent Shelves, in case you were quicker than you meant to be.
MORE THAN ONE SHELF
Open as many as the job needs — one per task, one per folder, one for the thing you will deal with later. New shelves never land on top of the ones you already have.
SHELVES THAT COME BACK
The last ten shelves you closed are one click away in the menu bar, and they survive a restart. Quitting the app does not cost you the pile you built.
ZIP WITHOUT LEAVING THE SHELF
One click turns everything on a shelf into a single archive, which lands right back on the same shelf — ready to drag into an email. No helper apps, no Terminal.
KEYBOARD, IF YOU PREFER
⌃⌥N opens a new shelf. ⌃⌥V opens one filled from your clipboard. ⌃⌥S shows and hides them all.
ENGLISH AND ROMANIAN
Pick your language in Settings and the whole app switches on the spot — menus, open shelves, everything — without a restart.
IT ASKS FOR NOTHING
No Accessibility permission. No Screen Recording. No Full Disk Access. No account, no sign-in, no analytics, and no network code at all — there is nowhere for your files to go. Shakelf is sandboxed by macOS and can only touch what you hand it by dragging it in.
It lives in the menu bar instead of the Dock, weighs a few hundred kilobytes, and is written in Swift with no third-party code.
One annoyance, fixed. Nothing more.
