Lessons no longer hide their own guides. • The lesson panel used to sit over the bottom of the paper, and a stroke that started under it never reached the canvas — on an iPad in landscape, the tail of the Kite lesson could not be drawn at all. The panel now moves to the top whenever the next step's guides are underneath it, and back again when they are not.

Six new brushes, in three new sets. • Organic: Leaf Scatter throws leaves along your stroke, each one turned a different way. Grass grows a tuft of blades from every point you touch. • Luminance: Star Scatter drops eight-point sparkles, and Bokeh paints the soft out-of-focus circles you get behind a night-time photo. • Digital: Pixel Blocks paints in hard squares on a fixed grid, and Checkerboard fills that grid in alternating tiles. Both snap to the same lattice wherever you start, so separate strokes line up. • Every one of them works with pressure — press harder for bigger leaves, brighter stars, denser pixels.

Three new textures — and every texture brush repainted. • Sponge lays down porous, broken paint. Crosshatch weaves a lattice of diagonal threads that keeps its gaps when you go over it again. Confetti scatters angular flecks around your stroke. • Every texture brush now paints its own ink. Charcoal Dust, Stipple, Soft Pastel and Spray Paint were all fainter than they should have been, and the two chalk brushes keep their grain instead of smoothing out. • Undo now takes back a texture stroke. It used to leave the marks on the paper. • The faint pale band that trailed every texture stroke is gone. • Halftone starts at a width where its dots can actually form, and Splatter no longer thins out at its largest sizes.
