Learn Languages with Retriever
Speak English, Spanish & more
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
A round of language a day with historical figures and classic literature. English, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.
Learn Languages with Retriever turns great lives into daily language lessons.
Pick the people whose lives you admire and the app builds a course of your own. Each question is spoken by that person — listening, speaking, sentence building and real conversation, a little every day.
■ Four languages
English, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. Choose the one you want and the course is assembled in it.
■ A course built from the people you chose
Historical figures and classic literature. The names you pick become the order of your level-by-level curriculum.
■ Lessons in their own voice
Every question comes from that person, and each correct answer is praised in your native language.
■ Talk with them
Speak and listen as if you were on a call. (The conversation is an AI re-creation, not a real statement by that person.)
■ A little every day
One more round today and a daily streak keep the habit small enough to keep.
■ Plus subscription
Learn as much as you want, with no heart limit.
Everyone in the app is a public-domain historical figure or a character from classic literature.
Admiration is the best teacher. Start today.

Leave a lesson and come back to pick up right where you stopped.
• If you leave a lesson and return within 24 hours, it resumes from the question you stopped at. If the app closes after you answer the last question, you go straight to the completion screen.
• Home now has the figure's word of the day. Open the speech bubble to hear one of their sentences and see what it means. Now and then a golden word appears and is saved to your profile.
• You can add a word of the day widget to your iPhone home screen.
• After a lesson, see the figure's verdict on today and what to do next at a glance. Study three days in a row to talk with that figure one more time.
• Your first lesson now opens with a short note on what to expect.
1.16.5 Oct 9
Spanish and Chinese learners can now build their own course too.
• If you're learning Spanish or Chinese, you can now create your own course with a figure from Settings.

• More than 30 figures now have their own recognizable look, and tapping a face opens their real portrait.

• Fixed content sliding under the clock when scrolling the Today tab, and tidied spacing in Settings.
• You can now change your password in Settings after confirming the current one. Deleting your account asks for your password once more.
• Settings > Edit my tastes lets you pick your tastes again without losing your progress.
• The explanation after a wrong answer now appears in the language you chose for the app.

• English text fields now open with an English keyboard, plus fixes for dialogue-blank spacing and account settings that could be blocked on shared networks at work or school.
1.16.1 Sep 25
Fixed the bug where finishing a lesson didn't unlock the next one.

• Dialogue questions now respond when you pick the right word — with sound. Tapping a wrong chip still costs no hearts.
• Fixed audio getting quiet after saying a single word.
• Fixed Spanish, Chinese and Japanese sentences being read with an American English accent.
The app is now called **Learn Languages with Retriever** — it shows as "Retriever" under the home screen icon. You don't need to delete or reinstall anything; only the name changed and your progress is untouched.

1.15.0 Sep 7

• Fixed a bug where pressing Skip on those screens recorded a wrong answer.
• The notice about where this app uses generative AI has been updated. Whenever it changes, we'll show it to you again.
• Signing in and saving progress are faster.
