Word packs are here: ten sets of 200 words for where you are headed. IELTS, TOEFL, Everyday English, GRE, SAT/ACT, GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, ISEE/SSAT, and Volume II, which carries on at your level once you have read it all. Try any pack free for three days: its words come to your widget, then your own words carry on. Keep the ones you like, or take the Whole Library: every pack, plus the Key to read ahead. The Whole Library is at a launch price until November 15. Hapax itself stays free, with no ads and no account.

Tap a pronunciation and you now hear the word even with your iPhone on silent. Anything already playing dips under the word for a moment, then comes back.

History now shows the words of the level you are reading. Words from other levels are folded underneath, one tap away. When you share a word, a link to its page goes with it, so whoever you send it to can read the whole entry. Near the end of a level, Hapax counts the words left. When you finish one, you can share the last page. There is a new Send Hapax link at the bottom of the app, plus smaller fixes.

Saving a word is now a bookmark. Tap it on today’s word or on any word in your history. The Vellum theme is now called Paper. Each level now runs to its end without repeating a word. When you finish one, Hapax tells you, and you can move up a level or read it again from the start. Practice asks sharper questions: no near-synonyms among the choices, and better fill-in-the-blank sentences. Liked a word? There is now a Rate Hapax link at the bottom of the app. Section titles no longer shrink at large text sizes, plus smaller fixes.

Save the words you want to keep. Tap Save on today’s word or on any word in your history and it gets a gold bookmark, and Saved gathers them in one place. Some words now say where they came from, in one line under the example. Only the ones with a story worth knowing, like the dead frogs behind galvanize. If you use a larger text size, the picture you shared was missing the word itself. That is fixed, along with a long list of smaller things at large text sizes and on smaller iPhones.

Vellum, a new theme set on paper, and a typeface of your own: the system font or a classical serif. Both of them reach the widget. The widget was redrawn. The word is far larger and the entry uses the whole space. Tap History to fold it away once it has grown long. Theme, typeface and app icon now sit together at the top of the screen.

No changes to the app itself this time. Hapax is now listed in ten more languages, so more people can find it in their own.

Hapax is now a real iPad app. The entry is set like a page, at a size meant for the larger screen, and it turns with the iPad. You can choose the app icon to match your theme, and hold a word to copy it with its pronunciation and definition. The launch screen is the Hapax mark now instead of a blank white rectangle. The word turns over at midnight while the app is open, and the whole app holds together at the largest text sizes.

Longer words could be cut short on the card you share and on the Android lock screen. Both now measure the word and size it to fit, so the whole word always shows.

Fixes the shared word card. The word itself could come out far too small in the picture, which made a shared card hard to read. It is now measured and sized correctly every time.

The share card now says Hapax is free on iPhone and Android, so a word you share can actually be found. Smaller download, and the difficulty row no longer wraps at large text sizes.
