GAA: Over The Bar
Gaelic Football & Hurling
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Draw the flight, beat the wind, get it over the bar. Two hundred games of Gaelic football and hurling.
Draw the flight of the ball with your finger and get it over the bar.
Over The Bar is a Gaelic football and hurling game built around the thing other sports games leave out: a graded scoreline, and the forty metre arc.
You are not passing or failing a level. Every game has a par to beat, the way a hole of golf does, and the question is never whether you finished it — it is what you finished it with.
DRAW THE BALL'S FLIGHT
Point at the gap above the crossbar you want the ball to sail through. Draw a curve instead of a straight line and it will bend that way, left to right or right to left, and still arrive where you aimed. The line you draw is a promise.
WIND THAT ACTUALLY BITES
The wind blows across the pitch in front of you and moves the ball for real. Heavy February ground plays shorter than hard summer ground. Everything is simulated properly — the physics were tuned against real distances, not guessed at.
WORK IT UP THE FIELD
The longer games start too far out to shoot. The ball has to be moved forward first, and you do not pass to a player, you pass to a patch of grass — whoever gets there first has it. Put it in front of a man who is running onto it.
TWO CODES, PROPERLY SEPARATE
A hundred football games and a hundred hurling games. The sliotar is small, fast and travels a very long way. The football is heavy and the wind pushes it around. Two different games, not one game with two skins.
BEAT PAR, THEN BEAT IT BETTER
Three stars on every game: one for reaching par and two for the objectives, which are shown to you before a ball is kicked rather than hidden until afterwards. Score with every attempt. Finish with no wides. Put one over from beyond fifty.
One hundred games from junior club championship to All-Ireland final. It works offline, it collects nothing about you, and the graded scoreline supplies all the tension it needs.
Over The Bar is an independent game. It is not endorsed by, affiliated with or connected to the Gaelic Athletic Association or any county board, club or competition. No official crests, badges or team kits are used.
