Official USGS and NOAA river data, translated into a straight answer on whether it's a good day to paddle or fish. No account, no subscription, no paywall.
Down to Float reads the river for you, then tells you straight whether it's a good day to paddle, fish or float.
River conditions are public record, scattered across USGS, NOAA and NWS feeds full of numbers that don't mean much until you know what to look for. This app pulls that official data together and turns it into a plain answer to the only question that matters: is it good today.
Live stage, discharge and water temperature come directly from USGS Water Services gauges nationwide, refreshed the moment you check. No estimates, no crowdsourced guesses, no modeling layered on top of the source. Just the government's own numbers, presented clearly.
Scrub the interactive hydrograph with your finger to see exactly what the water was doing at any hour over the past week, with haptic detents right at threshold crossings. It's a tactile way to feel a river's rise and fall, not just look at a line.
Each gauge carries a plain-language rating for paddling, fishing, boating, tubing and swimming, built from flood category, rise rate and water temperature together. It's the read an experienced local would give you, not a raw data dump.
Flood context comes straight from the NOAA National Water Prediction Service, with action, minor, moderate and major thresholds spelled out, plus a projection of how long until the river reaches flood stage at its current rate of rise. Active National Weather Service alerts for the area around each gauge are readable in full, right where you're already looking.
Set your own personal levels per gauge. You know what runnable, too low and too pushy actually mean for your boat and your skill, so name those marks yourself instead of trusting a generic scale. Get notified the moment a river crosses a height you've chosen, rising or falling.
Find gauges near you on a map with status-colored pins, browse a searchable index by state, and keep a watched list for the stretches of water you return to season after season.
Down to Float is a field tool, not a replacement for official emergency guidance or a life-safety device. For official flood warnings and safety decisions, always defer to the National Weather Service and local authorities.
There is no subscription, no account and no paywall. Download it, add your rivers, and know what the water is doing before you leave the house.
