What is biting out there, this month.
Tsurizukan is a field guide to the fish of Japan, searchable by season,
by fishing method, by the kind of place you are standing on, and by name.
Every feature works offline — on a breakwater or a boat with no signal.
■ Biting this month
Open the app and the first thing you see is what is catchable this month,
with the peak-season fish marked. Pick any month from January to December
to compare.
■ 567 fish of Japan
Search by Japanese name, kana, English name, scientific name or local name.
"マダイ", "まだい", "madai" and "sea bream" all find the same fish.
534 species carry a photograph, sourced from Wikimedia Commons and similar
CC-licensed material; author and licence are listed inside the app as the
licences require.
258 of those species also carry full fishing data — season, method, rig and
eating notes where appropriate.
■ Season calendar
Every detailed species shows a twelve-month calendar that separates the
months it can be caught from its peak months, so you can tell the fish you
travel for from the fish you simply run into.
■ Methods and tackle
Sixteen methods, including sabiki, float fishing, surf casting, eging,
jigging, live-bait fishing, freshwater lure fishing and stream bait fishing. Each one lists its
difficulty, the shores it suits, who it suits, and the tackle you need with
an indicative price range. Eight kinds of place cover the coast, rivers and lakes.
■ Dangerous fish
Venomous spines, venomous bites, toxic flesh, sharp teeth — the fish you
should not grab bare-handed, collected in one list and shown at the top of
each species page, never collapsed.
Note: the hazard and first-aid text is general reference information only.
It is not a substitute for the judgement of a professional or a medical
practitioner. If you are stung or bitten, or feel unwell, seek medical care.
No preparation instructions are given for fish with toxic parts — pufferfish
handling requirements vary by prefecture; never prepare a self-caught pufferfish as an amateur.
■ Ten columns
Etiquette on the water, the basics of safety, fishing permits and fishing
rights, how to check closed seasons and size limits, beginner guides to
sabiki / chonage / eging, three knots worth knowing, and how to dispatch
and carry your catch. Sources are cited.
Note: rules and access conditions vary by place and time. Check current
local information before fishing.
■ Works offline
The guide data and the photographs are bundled with the app. Search and
browse with no connection at all.
■ Nine languages
Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Spanish,
French, German and Brazilian Portuguese. Not just the interface — the fish
descriptions, fishing notes and safety warnings are translated too.
Japanese, English and scientific names are shown side by side, which helps if
you are fishing in Japan from abroad, or pointing at something in a tackle
shop and asking what it is.
Note: a fish is shown under its name in your language only where an
established one exists; otherwise the English or scientific name is used.
