Hoop Hoop - A Desk Toy

Basketball, one arc at a time

Hoop Hoop hangs a basketball hoop over your desktop. The ball sits at the bottom of your screen, wherever it last came to rest. Drag it toward the hoop, let go, and watch the arc. That is the whole game. There is no game window — nothing to move, nothing to resize, nothing to close. Your whole screen is the court, and everything on it carries on underneath. HOW IT PLAYS THROW IT, DON'T SLING IT — Drag the ball toward where you want it to go, not away from it. The ball rests on the floor, so there is a whole screen of room above it and none below; pulling back would have wasted half the power range. AN ARC, NOT A LINE — There is gravity, so a shot is a curve. What you are judging is the shape of it, which is why the same distance can be reached two different ways: flat and hard, or high and soft. A dotted guide leaves the ball while you aim, computed by the same physics the ball itself uses, so it cannot lie — but it stops early, and the rest is your judgement. A HOOP THAT MOVES IN TWO DIRECTIONS — Every basket rehangs it somewhere new: anywhere across the screen, and at any height from just under the menu bar down to halfway. No two shots have the same shape. A BACKBOARD THAT IS ON YOUR SIDE — It is solid only while the ball is rising, and a hit turns the ball down and steers it toward the middle of the rim. Banking is meant to help, the way it does on a real court. THE RIM TIGHTENS — Every basket in a row takes a little off the rim, and a miss opens it back up. From three in a row the hoop starts drifting gently while you aim. That is the entire difficulty curve: no levels, no modes, no menus to learn. A BASKET RESETS NOTHING — The ball drops through, hits the floor and rattles to a halt, and your next shot is taken from wherever it ends up. Only the hoop moves. BUILT TO STAY OUT OF THE WAY • Clicks fall straight through. Hoop Hoop covers the screen but listens only while the cursor is actually on the ball; everywhere else your editor, your browser and your Dock behave exactly as if it were not running • It cannot take keyboard focus. Click the ball and the app you were typing in stays the active one — which is also why there are deliberately no keyboard shortcuts • No Dock icon, no window in your app switcher, no notifications. It lives in the menu bar, and the icon there carries the live score • Show / Hide, New Ball, Reset Score, mute, volume, light and dark, always on top, ball trail and open at login are all one click away in that menu • A ball at rest stops the animation timer dead — nothing is stepped and nothing is redrawn. What keeps running is the audio engine holding the output awake, about half a percent of one core, and that is what stops the first bounce after a quiet spell from arriving without its attack • Every sound — the throw, the rim, the board, the swish — is synthesised in code when the app starts. Nothing is streamed and nothing is fetched, and the whole app is about one megabyte • Sleep, waking up, plugging in headphones or an external display: the audio engine rebuilds itself instead of quietly going silent by the afternoon PRIVACY Hoop Hoop collects nothing. There is no account, no analytics, no crash reporting, and no network code of its own. It asks for no permissions at all — not the microphone, not the camera, not your files, not accessibility. Your score is a number in your Mac's own preferences. PRICE Free. No subscription, no in-app purchases, no ads, and no "pro" version withholding half the game. Every future update is included, and Family Sharing covers your own Macs. Requires macOS 13 or later. Apple silicon and Intel.

A new app icon — the basketball itself, on a darker court-coloured tile. Nothing about the game has changed.
