Squared² is Dots and Boxes — the pencil-and-paper classic, rebuilt with care. This is a game I remember playing in school with my friends, and I am so pleased to bring it to a new, modern digital format. This game goes by a few other names too, depending on where you grew up: Boxes, Squares, Paddocks, or Pigs in a Pen. One purchase. No ads, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, nothing dangled behind a paywall. Ever.
Draw a line. Claim a box. Steal the chain. It teaches in one minute and stays interesting for years — the little game your grandparents played on napkins turns out to run surprisingly deep.
Eight boards, from a two-minute 3×3 to the 12×12 marathon, including the classic 10×10 paper size — and the Swedish opening, which starts with the whole border already drawn and drops you straight into the chain battle.
Four computer strengths that actually play differently. Easy plays loose and gives chains away. Medium plays the percentages. Hard and Expert read the chains ahead and make you earn every box. And every opponent varies its openings, so no two games start alike.
Pass & play with two, three, or four around one screen. Tap any name to rename a seat, or sign in to Game Center and play as yourself. Your game saves itself after every move — quit anytime, resume exactly where you left off.
It plays the whole world, too. Sign in with Game Center and find a match with two, three, or four players — turn-based games you take at your own pace, with a notification when it's your move, or live matches in real time. Invite a friend to a private game, or play someone nearby, device to device over your own Wi-Fi — no account needed.
An ink-on-paper design in light and dark — dot-grid paper, real Space Grotesk and IBM Plex type, and line-draw and box-pop animations that make every claim feel earned.
Every finished game earns XP. Climb the levels, then chase 28 achievements and six Game Center leaderboards — longest chain, best win streak, most boxes, total wins, games finished, and rank points.
