Shazam matches recordings. When someone plays a piece themselves, there's nothing to match. Encore listens to the music instead of the recording. Shazam can't name a piece someone is playing. It matches recordings — the exact studio take, note for note. A cover, a student, a livestream, a concert hall: none of them match anything, so you get nothing. Encore listens to the music itself. It follows the melody, the way you would if you knew the piece. That's why a different performance still works. HOW IT WORKS Press Listen. Give it thirty seconds. You get a name. Thirty seconds, not five — a melody needs more to go on than a recording fingerprint does. It's the difference between recognising a face and matching a photograph. WHEN NOBODY KNOWS Encore doesn't know everything, and it says so. Right now it knows the public domain classical repertoire well, and it is learning everything else from the people who use it. When it doesn't recognise something, it doesn't shrug. Your recording becomes a page anyone can answer. Someone recognises it, you get told, and from then on the app answers that piece instantly — for you and for everyone after you. So the promise isn't "an instant answer every time".
