NOT A GOVERNMENT APP: The Outdoors App is made by Outdoors Company LLC, an independent company. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any government agency and does not represent any government entity. Park, permit, weather and wildfire information comes from the official government sources listed below, which are the authority.
Trails, campgrounds, campsites and parks across the United States, with 3D maps, offline maps and every detail you need in one place.
FIND YOUR NEXT TRAIL
Search more than 148,000 trails, from an hour's walk to a week in the backcountry. Filter by length, elevation gain, difficulty, dogs allowed and accessibility, and see what is genuinely near you.
CAMPGROUNDS AND CAMPSITES, ESTABLISHED AND DISPERSED
More than 48,000 campgrounds, from reservable sites in national and state parks to more than 21,000 free dispersed spots on public land. Go down to the individual campsite: tent or RV, hookups, price, vehicle length, shade, pets and water, with photos. If a campground is full, get an email when a cancellation frees a site.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Distance, climb, time and an elevation profile. Permits, seasons and conditions. Photos and reviews from people who were there, and the managing agency's own page, with where each fact comes from and when we last checked it.
SEE THE TERRAIN IN 3D
Tilt the map and see the climb before you commit. Topo maps with contours and hillshade, plus weather radar, weather alerts and wildfire perimeters.
MAPS THAT WORK WITHOUT SIGNAL
Download trails, campgrounds and whole map regions before you go, and everything still works in the canyon where your phone does not.
RECORD, IMPORT AND FOLLOW YOUR ROUTE
Record your hike with the phone in your pocket and the screen off. Start from a trail page and the app shows how far along you are, the climb still ahead, and when you have wandered off the route. Bring in GPX, TCX and FIT files from a watch or another app, one or hundreds at a time.
SEND IT TO YOUR GARMIN
Send a trail or a hike you recorded to a Garmin watch, bike computer, inReach or handheld. The course is built on your phone, so a saved trail can be sent with no signal.
LET FAMILY FOLLOW ALONG
Share one live link. Your family see your planned route, your check-ins and when you plan to be back, with no app or account. Link a SPOT, or check in from your phone. Turn it off any time.
THRU-HIKE MAPS
Curated maps of America's long trails — the Pacific Crest, the Appalachian, the John Muir and more — with every water source, resupply town, ranger station and bailout listed, and a link to the official permit page. Permits are issued by the managing agencies, not by this app.
NATIONAL AND STATE PARKS
More than 10,000 parks, with contacts, the agency's own page and what is nearby.
BUILD YOUR OWN MAPS
Drop markers, draw areas, add photos and notes, and bookmark the places you want to go.

Location is used to show what is nearby and to centre the map. Decline it and the app still works. Background location is used only while a recording you started is running. A live link shows your check-ins to anyone with the link until it stops; you choose when to start one.

Ratings & Reviews
Send to Garmin: send a trail, or a hike you recorded, to a Garmin watch, bike computer, inReach or handheld. On a trail page, tap Send route.
Import your GPS files: bring in GPX, TCX and FIT files from a watch or another app, one at a time or many at once, zip files included.
Follow my hike: share one live link and your family can see your planned route, your check-ins and when you plan to be back, with no app or account. Find it under More → Follow my hike.
On a satellite connection, your saved maps keep working and the app waits for bars or Wi-Fi before downloading.
If our map provider is ever unavailable, a backup map takes over so the map never goes blank.
