Find the file you remember downloading - even when you no longer remember its name. Search your Mac by website or URL. Everything stays private and on-device.
Find the download you remember - even if you forgot its name.
Download Detective helps you rediscover PDFs, installers, images, archives, and other files using the website or URL they came from. Choose a folder and turn hidden download-source metadata into a clear, searchable library.
FIND BY SOURCE
Search by website, domain, filename, extension, source URL, or local path. Select a domain to see every matching file together.
SEE THE DETAILS THAT MATTER
Inspect each file’s name, kind, size, dates, full path, and available source URLs. Open the file, preview it with Quick Look, reveal it in Finder, copy its path or source URL, or reopen its source page.
SCAN ONLY WHAT YOU CHOOSE
Use the standard macOS folder picker to select Downloads, Desktop, Documents, an external drive, or another folder. Download Detective has read-only access and never scans outside the folder you select.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Scanning and search happen entirely on your Mac. There is no account, analytics, advertising, tracking, cloud service, or external database. Your files, filenames, paths, searches, and download metadata are never uploaded or shared.
BUILT FOR MAC
Download Detective is a focused native macOS utility with fast search, source filtering, sorting, file-kind filters, keyboard shortcuts, and Quick Look support.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
Source information depends on metadata already attached to each file by macOS and the app that downloaded it. Files may appear under Unknown Source when that metadata was never saved or was later removed. Download Detective does not reconstruct deleted browser history or make network requests to identify a source.
Download Detective is a private Finder companion for one specific job: helping you find downloaded files by where they came from.
