A trip computer, like a handheld navigator. Tap the gauge on the map for a full screen of large, live figures: speed, elevation, ascent and descent speed, grade, vertical speed, distance, heading, coordinates, time and battery. It works whether or not a hike is recording, keeps the screen awake, and has a Big Numbers mode for a glance in the sun. Hold a field to swap it for another. Search the map, with or without a signal. A search box at the top of the map looks through the trails and places in front of you, everything you have saved, and the trail names inside your downloaded areas, which are kept on the phone when a download finishes. Type a coordinate and it takes you there; a typed coordinate is never sent anywhere. With a signal the wider trail index joins in; without one, nothing waits for it. A finished hike can no longer be lost. The recording is held until it is safely stored, and if that fails you are offered Try Again instead of an empty screen. BUILT FOR NO SIGNAL • A downloaded area is used the moment the map is over it, with no wait for a network check and no flip back to the online map when the connection recovers • Elevation profiles read the terrain you downloaded before asking the network, so climb figures work in airplane mode • A hike that iOS stopped in your pocket is recovered the moment the app relaunches, before anything touches the network • The Lock Screen card no longer disappears after eight hours, and the widget stops counting while you are paused • Pause and Waypoint stay within reach when the hike panel is collapsed, and pausing no longer freezes your position • Changing tracking accuracy applies at once, and Low Power Mode or a battery under 20% offers a one-tap switch to Battery Saver • A hole in a track now says why it is there, so a gap can be explained rather than guessed at GETTING THERE • Press and hold a place and HikeGPS works out a walking route to it from the paths on your downloaded map, on the device, no connection needed • Routes prefer trails and take a road only where a road is the only way through. The turns are written down • The route arrow turns with the map when the map turns with you WEATHER AT THE TRAILHEAD • Check the forecast where you stand and see it again with no signal, labelled with how old it is. Walking on no longer hides it • Your position is rounded to about a kilometre before a forecast is asked for, when you open the weather screen or start a hike OFFLINE MAPS • A slow moment no longer ends a large download: a timed-out tile is retried while the download keeps going • A finished area shows the space it actually uses, and "Large downloads on Wi-Fi only" now does what it says ALSO • The camera is the iOS camera again, full screen, with nothing of the app drawn over its controls • Auto-pause: stand still and the hike pauses itself, then resumes once you walk on • If location access is taken away mid-hike, HikeGPS says so and offers to open Settings • On a fresh install the map opens on your own position • Paragraphs that had shipped in English everywhere are now translated

A pause you asked for is never undone for you • The control lock now covers the map and the tabs as well as the panel, so a pocket cannot reach them, and Finish asks twice with VoiceOver on THE MAP OPENS WHERE YOU ARE • On a fresh install the map opens on your own position instead of flying there from a valley in California • The compass no longer freezes for the rest of the session after a hike ends GETTING THERE, NOT JUST KNOWING WHERE IT IS • Press and hold a place on the map and HikeGPS works out a walking route to it from the paths, tracks and footways on your downloaded map — on the device, with no connection • Routes prefer trails, and take a road only where a road is the only way through. A motorway is never part of one • The turns are written down: tap the list button while following a route to read them, named where the map names the way • "Navigate here" used to need a hike already running before it would do anything. It now works from the moment the phone knows where you are, which is when you are actually planning OFFLINE MAPS • When the connection slows to a crawl, the map now really does switch to your downloaded data and redraws with it, instead of announcing the switch and leaving the old map on screen • If nothing is downloaded for where you are looking, at the detail you are looking at it with, the map stays with the service however slowly it answers — a slow map beats being dropped onto a world map that stops well short of trail detail • Resuming a download whose data had been cleared rebuilds it, rather than repeating that the map could not be found • Terrain is only requested from providers that actually have it SIGHTINGS • Camera permission is asked for before the viewfinder opens, an identification can be cancelled while it runs, and the crop is a true square, so what you frame is what the model sees • A damaged species bank now says it is damaged instead of claiming it was never installed TRAILS • Saved loops and unnamed routes keep their identity as you pan and zoom, so a saved trail stays saved and its elevation profile is not fetched again • Circular trails can now be routed on, and junctions merge correctly at high latitudes • Tapping a trail on the map and then choosing to follow it, show it, or download its area now closes the panel and does the thing, instead of leaving the buttons looking dead APPLE WATCH • Pause and resume from the wrist are honoured separately, the workout starts only when a hike is genuinely running, and paused figures stay readable • The "phone is silent" banner waits until the phone has really failed to answer ALSO • Numbers and units are formatted for your language throughout, and several paragraphs that had shipped in English in every language are now translated • Buttons across the map, the crop editor and the filters meet the 44-point minimum touch target • Anonymous usage statistics — which screens are opened and when a hike is started, finished or exported, never your routes, photographs or sightings — are now always on, and the Settings switch has been removed

There is now an Apple Watch app. Start a hike on the phone and it comes up on your wrist by itself: distance, time and ascent in figures you can read at a glance, your route on the real map, and pause, resume and finish without taking the phone out of your pocket. • Distance, time, ascent, and the secondary figures you chose on the phone, updated as you walk • The map is drawn on the phone with the same hiking cartography and sent to the watch, so you get named trails and terrain rather than a bare line on a blank face — and it works with no signal, like the rest of the map • Your position and route are drawn live over it, and a fresh map is sent as you walk towards the edge of the one you have • Pause, resume, finish, and drop a waypoint from the watch • Heart rate while a hike is running, on a watch that measures it • Figures dim when the phone has not been heard from recently, rather than showing you a stale number as though it were current • When there is nothing to show, the watch says which thing to do about it — open HikeGPS on your phone, unlock it, move back into range — instead of leaving you guessing at a blank screen • Opening the watch app from the phone is done through a hiking workout, so iOS asks for Health permission once. Trails now appear when you zoom out. Below the close-in zooms the map showed parks, rivers and summits but not a single path, with a note beside it telling you to zoom in. The trail network is now drawn from the regional view down, so you can see whether somewhere is worth the drive before you set off — with no signal, like the rest of the map. • Trails are drawn from the wide regional view rather than only close in • Farm and forestry access roads are no longer drawn as trails, so open country reads honestly instead of appearing webbed with paths that are not there • The "zoom in for trails" note now checks what is actually on the screen, and stays away when trails are already drawn • AI Notes is now called Sightings — the same offline identification, hazard warnings and saved photographs, under a name that says what is in it

Photograph a plant, a bird, or an insect and HikeGPS names it — on the phone, with no signal and nothing uploaded. This build triples what it knows, and makes it far more careful about what it warns you of. • 150,000 species, up from 50,000, ranked by what is actually seen in the wild rather than photographed in gardens and zoos • Common names in German, Spanish, French, Japanese, and both written Chinese scripts — and saved notes now follow the language you switch to • Auto-crop suggests a frame around the subject before identifying, and you can still crop and rotate by hand — filling the frame is the single biggest thing you can do to improve a result • Full classification from Kingdom to Species, each rank in plain language rather than Latin alone • When the guesses all share a genus it says so first: "Oaks, 94%" rather than a 62% winner presented as the answer • Every photo is kept automatically, grouped by animals, plants, and fungi — swipe to share or delete Warnings that match the risk: • Dangerous species now raise a warning sized to the danger — a note about nettles, a solid red block about rattlesnakes, and the loudest ones sit above the photograph where they are read first • The list of hazards grew from six entries to more than fifty: venomous snakes worldwide, dangerous spiders and scorpions, bison, moose and mountain lion, the deadly fungus genera, and the plants that kill if eaten • A snake the app is unsure about now says so, because harmless species and venomous ones look alike and a photograph cannot settle it • Where your phone knows the continent, species never recorded there are nudged down the list — a nudge, never a filter, since animals do turn up far from home • Warnings no longer fire on a candidate the app barely believes in • Sharing a sighting now sends one image carrying the photograph, the name, the confidence, every other candidate, and the warning • Species pages show the raw similarity beside the percentage, and all of it can be selected and copied
