Organize your notes with AI • In Across papers, “Organize with AI” groups your comments and sticky notes in the chosen collection by topic and saves them as a research theme. It writes only the headings; every note stays as you wrote it and opens its paper at the place. Paper cards for your review table • “Paper cards…” in the library’s “…” menu writes each paper’s research question, method, data, findings and stated limitations from its own text. Every sentence carries its page, and a sentence the text does not support is dropped. The table exports as Markdown and CSV, and each card can be saved as a Zotero note. • The cards open as a table inside Rectoly. Tap a sentence and the paper opens at the page it comes from. AI with your own API key • Run translation, Organize with AI and paper cards with your own API key for OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and others — also on devices that cannot run the on-device model. Your text goes straight to the provider, and you are always asked before it is sent. In Settings › AI. Translate into Vietnamese, Ukrainian and Thai • Papers can now be translated into Vietnamese, Ukrainian and Thai as well (Thai with System translation). Choose one under Translation language. Swap the panes, move the columns • Press and hold the header of either of two PDFs side by side, or of the PDF beside Reading Mode, and move it (with a mouse, just drag) to swap left and right or top and bottom. The sidebar and the figure column move to either side the same way. The header’s Two-pane arrangement menu and VoiceOver can swap them too. PDFs on WebDAV, flagged in the library • When your library’s PDFs are on a WebDAV server that isn’t set up here, the library says so at the top and marks those papers “On WebDAV”. Set it up from there, before any paper fails to open. Also • A research theme now ends with “Passages that may relate”: paragraphs from your library’s papers that are close to your notes. • Handwriting on the PDF can now use a “Fountain pen” (iPad). • Two PDFs opened side by side are remembered as a pair, with their sides, and come back together the next time (iPad). • With page turning set to “One page at a time” or “Horizontal”, pages now slide across as they turn. • Now runs on iOS 17.0 and later (it needed iOS 17.6 before). Fixes and improvements • Fixed handwriting written or erased during a sync sometimes being undone by that sync. • Fixed a dot sometimes left where an Apple Pencil stroke begins, and made writing lighter. • Fixed formulas in Reading Mode sometimes losing large symbols such as sums, unions and roots. • Fixed extra spaces appearing in the text of highlights made on Chinese, Japanese and Korean passages.

Translate papers on your device Read English papers in your own language, in Reading Mode and on the PDF page itself. Translation runs on this device, and the paper is never sent to a translation service. Translations can be saved as attachments in your Zotero library for your other devices — the app asks the first time you turn translation on in Reading Mode. This uses your Zotero storage (300 MB on the free plan), about 100–300 KB per paper. On-device translation • Reading Mode shows each paragraph's translation beneath it. On the PDF, the translation can be painted over the page or, on a wide screen (iPad, Mac), shown as pages beside the original. • Download the translation model once (about 2.5 GB; Wi‑Fi recommended) and it works offline. • Translates English papers into the app's 19 other display languages: Hindi by the system's translator (iOS 26 or later), all the rest by the app's own model. • The app's own model needs a device with 8 GB of memory or more. • Part of the 14-day free trial and Rectoly Pro (one-time purchase). Try it on the sample paper and the sample library before you buy. • On the App Store in mainland China, the system's translator translates instead of the app's own model. Tools for translating • Translate from Here: select text, and translation starts from that paragraph. • Retranslate This Paragraph: try just that paragraph again, a different way, or restore the previous translation. • Translation Dictionary: register the terms you want, and every translation into that language uses them. • Translate Selection: translate only the text you select, on the spot. Nothing is saved or shared. Faithful to the math and the code • If the app cannot guarantee a translation's math or numbers, the paragraph stays in the original on the PDF page, and Reading Mode marks it “Check the math in the original” or “Check the numbers in the original”. • Reading Mode shows real superscripts and subscripts and puts accents on their letters; a line with symbols that can't become text, or with stacked fractions or matrices, is cut from the page. Formulas in the text are found in many more papers, and displayed equations keep their limits and roots. • Code, prompts and pseudo-code keep their indentation, line by line as printed, and are left out of translation and Read Aloud. Reading Mode structure • Figures and tables are found more reliably: a caption above or below gets the right body, table cells stay out of the text, and nothing is moved to a distant page. • Two-column reading order, where the references end and an appendix begins, and running heads are all recognised more reliably. • Fewer lines are dropped. Words split by a hyphen at the end of a line, missing spaces between words, and URLs broken across lines now read properly. Also • An exported PDF with annotations now keeps its text: it can be searched and copied, and your handwriting and highlights are added as annotations. • Handwriting in Reading Mode stays where you wrote it when a paper's structure is read anew; what can't be confirmed is listed under “Unmatched handwriting”, never drawn in the wrong place. Highlights and underlines stay on the words you marked. • Switch how pages turn — one page at a time, vertical or horizontal scrolling — straight from the “…” menu at the top of the screen. Fixes and improvements • Sticky notes made in Rectoly now appear on the page in Zotero's desktop app and on the web. Notes you made before appear too once the paper syncs. • The “Not enough iCloud storage” alert now appears once instead of again and again.

New • Formulas in Reading Mode: formulas inside paragraphs now appear as they do on the page, cut from the PDF itself — no more garbled symbols. They follow your text size and theme. • A cleaner first page: affiliations, e-mail addresses and received dates from the bottom of the first page no longer interrupt the abstract or introduction; they move to the endnotes. • Complete figures: figure images now include axis tick labels, axis titles and legends, so nothing is cut off in the figures list, the cards or exports. • Text size on your phone: Reading Mode's bar has a text-size button — smaller, larger and the current size in one menu. You can also pinch with two fingers. • The usage guide and the legal pages now open inside the app. • Settings names Linux among the computer versions. Fixed • Pinching to the smallest text size in Reading Mode could switch to another paper. • In full screen the page now stands centred. • Turning the page in full screen briefly shows the page number. • Opening a paper brings up the buttons more smoothly. • The guidance shown when you tap Highlight or Underline now appears every time. • On a wide iPad in landscape, buttons that fit the bar no longer hide in the "…" menu.

• Tool rail: the tools now sit in a vertical rail at the edge of the screen, so many more fit at once — on an upright iPad, all of them. The rest, and Customize toolbar, are in the rail's “…”. • Research themes and Zotero, both ways: when you send a theme as a Zotero note, you can also tag the papers it cites with the theme's name and put them in a collection of that name. Edits made to the note in Zotero come back into the theme; if both were edited, nothing is overwritten — a new note is made. • Citation styles: APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA, IEEE, Vancouver, Nature and GB/T 7714, for Copy with citation (⌘⌥C) and for the reference list when you export a theme to Word, Markdown or a Zotero note. • Scanned PDFs: better text recognition of Japanese, Chinese and Korean scans on iPadOS 27 and iOS 27; Japanese and Chinese scans are now read properly on devices set to Korean. • Fixes: on iPhone in portrait, the buttons at the top right of a research theme no longer look stacked on top of each other. Clearer wording throughout, with Zotero collections called “collections” everywhere.

• Research themes to Zotero: in a theme's … › Export › Zotero note, the theme becomes a note in your personal Zotero library, headings and all, with each quote linked to its page in the PDF. • Across papers now lists the annotations you made in Zotero, even on papers not opened here, and narrows to one collection and the collections inside it. • Figures and tables in scanned PDFs now appear in the figures list, and Chinese captions such as 圖 3-1, 圖一 and 續表 are recognized. • The paper list checks Zotero for changes when you open or return to the app, and papers deleted or moved to the Trash leave the list. • Clearer explanations of the highlight tools and of research themes. • Japanese scans now read correctly on devices set to Chinese.

What your desktop plugins wrote, read here • Citation counts from Citation Counts Manager show on each row and in the sort menu; read statuses from Zotero Reading List appear in the tag filter. They show only in a library that has them, and this app asks no service of its own. Set up WebDAV right where a PDF won’t open • When a PDF that seems to be on your WebDAV server won’t open, enter the URL, username and password right there; once the server checks out, the paper opens. Your own first PDF opens free too • Before the trial, the first PDF of your own — picked in Files or dropped on the app — opens free, just like your first Zotero paper. Rectoly on your computer • Rectoly also comes for Windows and Mac. Sign in with the same Zotero account and your library and purchase come with you. Send the link to your computer from Settings › About › Rectoly for Windows and Mac.

Read, think, write — without leaving the app From reading a paper to shaping your argument and drafting the text. This is the biggest update Rectoly for Zotero has had. Research themes • Send a passage to a theme, with its source. Keep the theme beside the paper, or open it as a sheet. • Drag a card from anywhere on it to rearrange; grab a heading and the whole section moves. Every card leads back to the paper and page it came from. • Export as Markdown or Word (.docx). Across papers • The library column has a new Across papers tab: search the annotations, the text and your handwriting in your whole library at once. • Japanese now matches on part of a word, too. Figures, tables and a comparison • Save a figure as PNG and a table as CSV — one paper at a time, or your whole library in one go. • Compare many papers' abstracts, methods, results and conclusions in one table, one row per paper. Your draft beside the paper • Open the document you are writing (.docx, .doc, .odt, .rtf, Markdown, plain text — password-protected ones too) in a column next to the paper. It re-reads the file every time you save. WebDAV and linked files • If Zotero syncs your files over WebDAV, Rectoly can now open them — and PDFs you add in the app go to your WebDAV server too. • Files that ZotFile or ZotMoov keep in Dropbox or Google Drive open once you choose the folder. Tools for reading • Read Aloud: hear the text in Reading Mode, in the system voice or the VoiceOver one. • Choose the typeface and line spacing in Reading Mode. • Filter annotations by colour and by kind. Citing and notes • Copy with the page number, and copy BibTeX or a citation key (Zotero's own citationKey and extra are used). • Touch a citation in the text to see what it refers to, with buttons to copy the reference and open the DOI. • Collect the notes on your highlights into note folders. A layout for how you use this device • On a tablet or phone, reading and thinking lead: search, Reading Mode, highlight, pen, sticky note and colour head the tool rail. On a Mac, the research theme column opens beside the paper and the writing tools come first. • Only the default places of the tools change; what you have arranged yourself stays. The switch is in Settings › General, and “Use this device’s layout” applies the defaults again. Also • Open PDFs on this device without signing in, including by drag and drop. • Choose how two panes and Reading Mode are arranged (automatic, side by side, one above the other) and drag the divider. • Remap keyboard shortcuts, use the side buttons on a mouse, and right-click menus. • Help now lives in the app: FAQ, what each icon means, hints the first time you meet a screen, and this What's New. • Rectoly runs on Apple silicon Macs (macOS 14.6 and later). Fixes and improvements • Fixed syncing with Zotero 7 on a computer stopping partway. Annotations made in Rectoly carried no sort position, so the computer could not take them in. Annotations already saved are repaired too: after the update, the first sync goes through your whole library once and fills them in. Nothing for you to do. • Fixed Rotate 90° right and Rotate 90° left on a text annotation turning it the other way. • A PDF you add now keeps its filename as the name of the attachment. • Error reports and usage statistics no longer carry filenames, paper titles, URLs or email addresses.

Fixes and improvements • Fixed the app becoming unresponsive for a while when showing highlights in a long PDF with many links. • Sign-in is more reliable when the server is busy: the app now waits and retries by itself instead of failing. • The app now lets you know, inside the app, when a new version is available.

Search your handwriting Notes you write with Apple Pencil are now read as text on your device, so you can search them (iPadOS 27 and later). • The library search has a new Handwriting tab: find the paper and the page from a word you wrote. • Handwriting results also appear when you search inside a PDF. Tap one and the place you wrote is marked. • Vertical writing is supported too. • Reading happens only on your device and never leaves it. Turning it off in Settings deletes what was read. Also • Support for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27.

Search and highlight scanned papers When you open a scanned PDF with no text in it, Rectoly now recognizes the text on its pages, right on your device. • Search finds words on scanned pages. • The highlight pen works on scanned lines. • A new “Translate” item in the highlight menu translates what you highlighted, scanned pages included. • Recognition runs on your device, and the original PDF is never changed. Fixes and improvements • Papers whose PDF isn't in Zotero storage are now marked “File not synced” in the list, and opening one tells you to sync the file from Zotero on your computer.

From a citation to your own copy Tap a marker like [12] and see what that reference is — and whether you already have that paper. No trip to the back of the document. • A paper you have opens beside the one citing it, with your highlights and handwriting on it. • A DOI or arXiv match is shown differently from a title match. • In Reading Mode, the cited paper's PDF opens to the right, and the column you are reading stays where it is. Jump from the outline The outline now works in Reading Mode. • Tap an entry on the paper's own contents page to jump to that section. Until now only the PDF view responded. • The sidebar outline lands on the section itself, not the top of its page. Entries pointing at the same page no longer collapse onto one spot. • The heading line sits at the top of the screen when you arrive. Fixes and improvements • Fixed the first paper downloaded after a reinstall not opening the reader, leaving the sidebar unresponsive. • Fixed highlights made in Reading Mode starting a few characters before the selected text. • Other stability improvements.

Rename Paper PDF Reads the author, year and title out of a PDF and builds a filename from your format. The original file is left alone. Available from Shortcuts and the watch folder. • What to do with new PDFs: “Only fix the name” needs no Zotero account. It renames the files where they sit and does nothing else. • Look up online: Asks Crossref and arXiv when the PDF does not say. With this off, only the PDF itself and your own library are used. • ASCII only: For libraries shared with desktop Zotero on Windows, or anywhere non-ASCII filenames get mangled. Japanese is not romanized — that part is left out instead. Fixes and improvements • Fixed a freeze right after launch with large libraries. • Trash: “Move to Trash” was deleting the item on Zotero for good. It now goes to the trash. • Adding PDFs: New PDFs go into the library or group you are viewing, uploads keep going in the background, and author, year and title are read from the PDF to create the item. • Launch: Fixed being treated as signed out when iOS launched the app in the background while the device was locked, a blank screen at launch, and a crash when the folder list contained duplicates. Sync now resumes where it left off if you close the app midway.

A fix release: Reading Mode no longer reads some papers twice, annotation sync no longer gets stuck on image annotations, and diagnostic reports keep their logs. • Reading Mode: on some publisher PDFs that carry an older text layer underneath the page, every paragraph appeared twice. Those duplicate lines are now removed. • Annotation sync: image annotations no longer leave automatic re-sending paused. Writes that Zotero rejects are reported once instead of retried, and the retry budget is counted per paper, so one failing paper no longer pauses the others. • Diagnostics: log files are stored where iOS won't purge them, so a diagnostic report no longer arrives without its logs.

Reading position sync is more reliable, and a few rough edges are fixed. • Reading position: the page you were on now travels through Zotero to your other devices — even without iCloud, another device opens right where you left off. • Trial status: refreshed every time you return to the app. Annotations that could not be sent while offline go out when you're back. • iCloud alerts: you're now told when a backup restore finishes, and when iCloud is out of space. • Data export: only papers that have something to export are offered for selection. • Plus clearer wording in Settings and stability improvements.

Rectoly 2.0 is a major update that rebuilds Reading Mode, handwriting, and sync. HANDWRITING SYNCS ACROSS DEVICES Apple Pencil handwriting is stored as a Zotero attachment and synced between iPhone and iPad. In Reading Mode, handwriting is anchored to the text and follows it when you change the font size. iCloud backup and a change history let you recover handwriting you deleted. READING POSITION AND STATUS SYNC Pick up on iPad right where you left off in Zotero desktop or web. Unread, in-progress, and finished papers are tracked automatically, with progress shown in the library. WORKBENCH AND SIDEBAR (iPAD) The Workbench pins a figure beside the text while you read. A persistent sidebar shows thumbnails, annotations, and the outline. PDFs can scroll vertically or horizontally with facing pages, Zotero-style. READING MODE IMPROVEMENTS Figures, tables, and equations are detected and placed in the text, and references like "Figure 1" jump to the figure. Pinch to change the font size and the text reflows on the spot. Japanese papers are supported (footnotes gathered at the end, paragraphs continued). Papers without detectable headings and PDFs over 500 pages now open in Reading Mode. SEARCH AND EXPORT Search the whole paper, search across your library, and find similar passages in other papers. Export annotations as Markdown, LaTeX, Typst, or Zotero notes.
