THE WATER INDEX
The Langelier Saturation Index tells you if the water will corrode or scale before you add anything, using temperature, pH, alkalinity, hardness and stabilizer: aggressive, balanced or scaling water, and what to fix first.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Does it tell me how much to add, or just what is wrong?
How much. Not "raise the pH" but the grams or millilitres of the product sitting in your pump room, for the volume you entered.
Does it know which chlorine I have?
It handles all four forms — liquid sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, trichlor and dichlor — because each has a different strength and a different side effect on stabiliser or hardness.
What is the water index for?

Is the volume just length by width by depth?
No. Rectangular, oval, round, kidney and stepped-bottom pools are all there, and a sloped bottom is actually calculated instead of guessed from the deepest point.
Can I follow the numbers blindly?
Treat them as orientative and follow the manufacturer's label, which wins every time. Fix things in the right order too — alkalinity, then pH, then chlorine, then stabiliser — or you will chase your own tail.
