You keep the last light at South Cape. For seven nights, ships still call. A father and child looking for a harbor that is gone. A skiff with nameplates. A woman asking if the station is closing. A former keeper who wants to know who is up there now. Some nights, no one comes. You listen, turn the lamp, and write what you can in the book. You are not saving them. You are giving each boat a last chance to be seen. Hold the beam on a ship until it answers. Sweep left and you light the empty bay. Hold the old rust mark and you can call a harbor that is not there. On the last night a relief boat asks you to come down. Follow the light out, or pull the cord and stay. No scores. No lives. The book only keeps what you did the first time.
