StormDistance: Point & Measure

Weather

Only for iPhone

iPhone

Use your iPhone’s location and compass heading to find tracked storm cells in the direction you are pointing. Choose a nearby search range, enter a custom distance, or select Unlimited. View the matched cell’s distance, direction, movement, and confidence assessment. A direction match does not identify the visible cloud or measure the distance to the edge of rain. Refresh local lightning information and government-issued alerts independently, even when no storm matches. Expand alerts to read their text, source, issue time, and expiry, and open official NWS information. Weather results are snapshots and can become outdated. Browse NOAA/NWS radar across the U.S. and explore observed radar echoes in 3D for selected areas or recent matched cells when coverage is available. Rotate, filter, and slice the radar view. Optional cloud appearance adds artistic cloud texture and decorative lightning; these effects do not show observed cloud boundaries or detected lightning strikes. Learn how to read results with the in-app guide, clearly labeled fictional teaching examples, and recorded NOAA radar from the Moore-area storm of May 20, 2013. Historical and educational views do not show current conditions. No account or purchase is required. Live aiming uses camera, location, and compass permissions. The camera is an aiming view; the app does not identify storms from photographs. StormDistance is for situational awareness and learning. It is not a substitute for official warnings, emergency instructions, or professional weather services.
