Divorce is a sequence of stages with a lot of waiting in between, and the rules are set by the state where the case is filed. This app explains both.
It is built for the person who has not decided anything yet.
HOW LONG, AND HOW MUCH
The first screen answers the two questions people actually arrive with, and shows the arithmetic behind each. Your state's statutory minimum is drawn separately from a planning estimate, and cited to the section it came from — because one is law and the other is an assumption, and an app that rendered them identically would be pretending otherwise.
Court filing fees come from your state's published schedule. Attorney cost does not: nothing official publishes what lawyers charge, so instead of repeating a survey figure, the app gives you the structure and you supply a rate you have actually been quoted.
ALL FIFTY-ONE JURISDICTIONS
Every state and the District of Columbia, with the same eight comparable facts each: residency, waiting period, any living-apart requirement, community property or equitable distribution, whether fault grounds survive, the filing fee, fee waivers, and what of a case is publicly visible. Each names the statute it was written from. Put two states side by side and the rows that differ are marked — useful when the two of you live in different ones.
WHAT PEOPLE FIND OUT TOO LATE
Twenty-three watch-outs, each in four parts: what people assume, what is actually true, when the difference costs money, and what tends to prevent it. A divorce judgment does not bind your lender. The decree alone does not move money out of a 401(k). Health coverage can end the day it is signed. A beneficiary form outranks a will.
THE PROCESS, AND THE DECISIONS INSIDE IT
Nine stages from before anything is filed to the paperwork nobody does afterwards. Twelve topics — property, the house, retirement, children, support, insurance, taxes, debt, following your case — each ending in the documents worth gathering and the questions worth asking a person.
Five routes compared, from filing it yourselves to full representation, each with an honest list of who it is wrong for.
NOTHING LEAVES YOUR PHONE
No account, no server, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifier. There is no network client in the app at all. It asks five questions so the figures mean something, keeps the answers in the encrypted store on your device, and sends nothing anywhere. There is nowhere in the app to type a name.
IMPORTANT
This app provides general legal information, not legal advice. It cannot tell you whether to end a marriage, predict what a court would decide, say what you are owed, or replace a licensed attorney or a court self-help centre. It points at legal aid, court self-help centres and volunteer attorneys throughout, and puts domestic violence resources on the first screen.
