Motive is a murder sudoku. Every case is a room plan with a body on it. Each suspect tells you one thing about where they stood — and every statement is true. Work out where everyone was, and whoever ends up alone with the body is your murderer.
THE RULES, ALL FOUR OF THEM
- Each person stood on exactly one square
- Nobody shares a row or a column — not with each other, and not with the body
- Furniture blocks: a table, a plant, a bookcase and a piano cannot be stood on. A rug, a chair and a sofa can
- Every statement is true. There are no liars in this game
NO GUESSING. EVER.
Every case is machine-checked twice before you ever see it: once to prove it has exactly one answer, and again to prove that answer can be reached by reasoning alone. If you are stuck, the next step is on the board. It is never behind a coin flip.
EXPLORING IS FREE
You get three hearts, and only a real contradiction costs one. Place someone on a blocked square and you are simply told no. Place them somewhere the evidence does not yet prove and you are told it is unproven — also free. A heart is spent only when a placement makes one of the statements impossible. Curiosity is not punished here. Bad reasoning is.
