Wonnel
Running game for ages 2 to 5
$1.99 · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Wonnel is a forest gnome. He runs to the right on his own, and a tap anywhere on the screen makes him jump. That is the only control there is.
The game is made for four- and five-year-olds. Children that age can't read yet, so there is no text in it at all: no words, no numbers, no menus that need explaining.
WHAT YOUR CHILD DOES
Wonnel collects acorns, berries and walnuts. A thorn bush, a puddle or a pile of leaves will trip him up: a few fruit roll away and he carries on. The only real danger is the gaps in the ground, and you can see those coming a long way off.
At the end, two towers of fruit stand side by side. The pale one on the left is the best run so far, the one in color on the right is the run just finished. No numbers, no letters. If the child's tower ends up taller, a crown flies over and settles on top of it.
DAY AND NIGHT
The start screen shows two pictures, day and night, and they double as the start button. By day, Wonnel runs through a bright forest. At night he carries a lantern and collects fireflies, and the circle of light around him grows as he finds more of them. The course is the same either way, just lit differently.
THE CHILD SETS THE PACE
There are three speeds, switched in a strip along the top of the screen. Slow to start with, faster once it comes easily.
A RUN ENDS BY ITSELF
After five minutes at the most, the picture fades and the usual result screen comes up. Nobody has lost. The game simply stops on its own, and there is nothing to argue about.
WHAT THIS APP DOES NOT DO
• no ads
• no in-app purchases. You buy it once and that is that
• no tracking, no analytics, no advertising identifiers
• no internet connection
• no accounts, no sign-in, no leaderboards
• no comparison with other children. The only best score is your child's own, and it stays on the device
FOR PARENTS
The legal notice, the privacy policy, support and the choice of language sit behind a gate that a four-year-old will not get through. Three rings show a circle, a square and a triangle, and a line of text underneath says which one to hold down. Which shape it asks for is picked at random every time the gate opens. Only that ring responds, and only if you hold it for three seconds without letting go. The other two do nothing, and letting go visibly resets it. The legal notice is stored in the app and needs no connection.
German, English, Spanish and French. There is no text in the game itself; it is the parents' area that is translated.
For iPhone and iPad. One purchase, nothing after that.
