Most estimating apps are document makers: they write the quote and never mention whether the price was any good. Girder is built around the question they skip — did this job make money?
THE PROFIT LINE
Build the estimate — steel by section and length, your hours, your extras — and the quote sits next to what you keep, live, while you move the markup. It also does the translation shops get wrong: a 50% markup is a 33% margin.
STEEL BOUGHT, NOT STEEL USED
Three 1.1 m posts do not cost 3.3 m of steel. They cost a 6 m bar, and the rest goes in the offcut bin. Girder charges what the merchant bills and shows the drop as its own line — a shop that cannot see what offcuts cost keeps quoting net weight.
Weights are calculated from the section, not looked up in a table, so a size that isn't in anyone's list still works. Bar, flat, tube, angle and plate in mild steel, 304, 316 and aluminium. Metric or imperial, and switching between them never changes a saved number.
HOURS THAT ACTUALLY GET BOOKED
Prep and fit-up, welding, finishing — three lines, not one bucket. Finishing is where hours disappear; book less than a third of your arc time to it and Girder says so. Wire, gas and discs are priced by quantity and rate, and can be worked out from the arc time you already entered.
THE ORDER LIST
Four lines of 50×50×3 on a quote are one order at the trade counter. Girder groups them, works out how many standard lengths that is, lists the cuts longest first, and shares it as plain text.
BEFORE YOU SEND
Girder reads the quote back before it goes out. Margin under the 30–35% custom fabrication targets on one-offs. Markup below the trade's 15–30% on materials. Arc time with no consumables priced. Section prices over two months old. And, after a few finished jobs, how far your hours usually land past your estimate.
WHAT THE JOB REALLY COST
Log the real hours as you work. Girder holds the quoted price fixed — that is what makes it a quote — and shows what the job actually paid: margin, money kept, per hour. After a few jobs it tells you which work you under-quote.
MONEY IN, NOT JUST EARNED
A finished job can read +$1,240 while the customer has paid nothing. Record the deposit and the balance as they arrive; invoices deduct what is paid, and the jobs list shows what is still out and what has passed thirty days. Every job carries a stage as well — draft, sent, won, done, invoiced, paid — so a quote that has sat with a customer for three weeks stops looking like one you never sent.
THE PAPERWORK
Quotes and invoices on your letterhead, itemized or as one figure so your costs stay yours. Customer signature on the phone. Photos of the drawing. Change orders that move an accepted price honestly instead of editing it after the fact.

Girder is a costing tool, not an engineering one. Section weights are estimates for quoting: hollow sections run about 2% heavy, angles within 0.3% of published tables. Do not use them for structural design.
