The word processor of 1989, rebuilt from scratch. WasPerfect 5.1 is not an emulator and not a theme. It is a from-scratch recreation of the DOS word processor that once ran on roughly 60% of desktops and in seven of every ten American law firms — the blue screen, the function keys, Reveal Codes, and the status line that read Doc 1 Pg 1 Ln 1" Pos 1". Everything is where your fingers left it. F3 is help. F10 saves. Shift-F7 prints. Alt-F3 splits the screen and shows every formatting code exactly where it lives. If your F-keys are set to hardware controls, press Alt-= and the program's own pull-down menus open inside the editor — every command reachable without a function key at all. THE BLUE SCREEN 80 columns of authentic bitmap type, pull-down menus with red mnemonics, and nothing else. No toolbar, no ribbon, no sidebar, no notification. The most distraction-free writing surface ever shipped — at any window size, or full screen. THE TEMPLATE, ON SCREEN The plastic card that lived above the F-keys is drawn along the window: Ctrl in red, Alt in blue, Shift in green. Click a word and it sends that keystroke, so the whole program is usable with the mouse alone. Press Command-K to take it away. BUILT FOR THIS MACHINE • Tabbed documents — Command-T opens another, Command-1 and Command-2 switch between them, and each is its own independent editor. • A live print preview beside the text, setting real type on a real page as you write. • Any folder you grant it, addressed by a drive letter, exactly as a DOS machine saw its disks. • A universal build — full speed on Apple silicon and on Intel. YOUR FILES STAY YOURS Documents are plain files you own. Save as .wp, plain text, Markdown, RTF or HTML, and print to paper or PDF through the standard print panel. Nothing is locked in a proprietary box. RADICALLY PRIVATE No account. No sign-in. No analytics, no telemetry, no third-party SDKs. The app contains no networking code whatsoever — it has never made a request and cannot make one. Everything happens on your own machine, offline, permanently. Folders you choose, and a long command that no longer takes the window with it. FOLDERS • Settings has a Folders list. Add any folder on your Mac and it mounts as a drive letter, exactly as a DOS machine saw its disks — F5 lists it, and the grant survives a relaunch. • Several at once. A folder added in one tab becomes a drive in every other one; two folders sharing a name no longer share a letter. • Downloads is allowed in one click, where a document arrives from mail or a browser. • iCloud Drive is there on launch, holding the same documents the iPad app writes. • Command-O opens a document and Command-Shift-O opens a folder. Both were documented and neither was bound. LIST FILES (F5) • Left and Right walk the tree. • A folder the app has not been granted says so, instead of looking empty. • Long listings scroll. • F5 stays inside the editor — no system panel opens over the blue screen. THE SHELL PANE • A command that runs long, prints without stopping, or has to be called off no longer freezes the editor. Output arrives as it is printed, and Escape stops the command.
