The app you install already keeps the hours; you do not have to go and find them. Quiet hours still apply, and any single hour is one tap away from off. The first time you open Prayers, a short card tells you what is already ringing and what the times are. Once. It does not interrupt you anywhere else. THREE NEW SETS OF PRAYER BELLS The Angelus & Rosary — the three Angelus at six, noon and six, rung the way they have been for eight hundred years: three strokes, a pause, three, a pause, three, and then the hour. With the Joyful and Glorious Mysteries, the Hour of Mercy at three, and the two antiphons that close a Catholic day. The Five Prayers — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha, worked out every day from your own latitude rather than read off a table. Candle lighting eighteen minutes before sunset on Friday, and Havdalah on Saturday night, each on the day it belongs to. Every prayer time in these sets is computed from your own coordinates and the real position of the sun, and every one was checked against the published tables. EVERY RECORDING REBUILT All twenty voices were measured, repaired and levelled. Truncated tails that clicked on every strike are gone. The iron bell was rebalanced — its loudest partial sat an octave and a half above its own note, which is what made it clang. The grandfather clock was rebuilt warm and even, and its chime figures now rise rather than fall. Changing the voice no longer changes the volume. THE BELL RINGS THE MOMENT YOU TOUCH IT Coming back from the background, iOS hands an app an audio engine that reports it is awake when it is not. BELFRY now checks whether the audio clock is actually moving, and if it is not, the bell is struck through the app's own audio session instead of waiting. Tested against eleven different ways of coming back; it rings the first time, every time. ON THE SECOND The hour was being struck up to a fifth of a second after the minute turned. It now lands within two milliseconds.
