A GPS audio guide that talks by itself and tells you which way to look: on foot, by bike, by car or by tram, in Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland.
Start the tour and put the phone away. As you reach a place, the guide starts talking about it. You press nothing. The app works out where you are, how fast you are moving and which way you are heading, and says "on your left" or "on your right". Between places a podcast about Australia fills the silence; when you arrive, the guide takes over.
GUIDES, ONE ACCESS
- Sydney: walk, ride or drive. 186 places, from the Opera House and the Rocks to Bondi, Watsons Bay and the beaches.
- Sydney Light Rail: the L2 and L3 lines, 22 places told between the stops. Free.
- Blue Mountains: self-drive, 63 places, from historic Windsor to the Three Sisters, Wentworth Falls and Leura.
- Hunter Valley: wine country by car, 51 places among the vineyards.
- Featherdale Wildlife Park: the park's own map with every enclosure numbered, and 34 animal stories.
- Melbourne: 90 places, two walking routes and a 149 km drive.
- Melbourne City Circle Tram 35: the free heritage loop around the city centre, 33 places told as the tram goes.
- Great Ocean Road: self-drive, 48 places from Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles and Tower Hill.
- Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley: self-drive, 34 places.
- Gold Coast: self-drive, 34 places from the beaches to Mount Tamborine.
- Cairns, Port Douglas and the Daintree: 36 places where the rainforest meets the reef.
Every guide also comes in Russian. Sydney and Featherdale also speak Japanese and Korean.
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
- It tells you where to look. "On your right" is worked out from your live heading, on any route you choose.
- It speaks by itself. No list to scroll, no button to press at every corner.
- No dead air. Between places you hear a podcast about Australia (history, nature, the way people live) and you can pick any episode.
- It keeps running with the screen off, in a pocket or a bag.
- A live map with your position and every place around you.
FOR WALKING, RIDING AND DRIVING
The commentary is timed to how fast you are going. On foot you get the detail; at 60 km/h you get the story that fits the stretch you are passing. If a place is already behind you, the guide says so instead of pretending you are arriving.
IN THE CAR
Listen on the phone or through the car speakers over Bluetooth. Keep the phone in a mount for the map; the guide does the talking.
WHO IS BEHIND IT
Written by Andrew Sorokin, a Sydney guide since 2006, and voiced in a digital Australian voice chosen for how easily visitors understand it. It sounds like someone talking to you, not a machine reading. The Russian edition has its own voice, picked the same way.
