30 new situations written only for defenders, midfielders and wingers, from academy days to the veteran years, so each position lives a different career. Defenders are no longer asked to take free kicks or penalties.

A season used to be one decision. It is now four: mid-season, the run-in, the close season, and what you do with the money. ■ 136 situations, in eleven languages Up from 45. A first-team season stands about two of them. ■ Stories that run for years Eleven threads, six of them shared and five written for one position. Most careers see at least one of them through to an ending, and a life usually leaves two behind. ■ Your position is on the record A keeper's saves, a striker's conversion, a midfielder's pass accuracy. Five of the threads only come to the position they were written for. ■ Condition, injuries, rehab A body that wears down, injuries with a grade to them, and a summer that can be spent putting it right. ■ The wage finally buys something There is a balance now, and close-season cards that spend it: a coach of your own, rehab, an agent, or save it for next summer. Prices are a share of your wage, so a third-division seventeen-year-old and a title-winning captain face the same decision. What you cannot afford is shown with its price on it rather than hidden. Money can also buy weeks off a lay-off, or buy you out of a contract. ■ Contract length is a decision A longer deal pays more. A shorter one builds the better career. ■ Leave mid-season The game survives being closed in the middle of a season and comes back where it was. ■ The global leaderboard is back It ranks careers on legacy now rather than total earnings, so a keeper and a striker are measured the same way. Every finished career goes up, your own place is pinned wherever it falls, and the six axes behind the score open up. ■ The odds, and what actually happened Every choice shows its odds before you make it, and the result card shows the change that was actually applied rather than a number written in advance.
