5Sugar: Sugar Scanner

Scan barcodes, see nutrition

Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

One number at the shelf: sugar per 100 g. 5Sugar shows it with a clear traffic light – free, no account, no limits. 5Sugar: the sugar check for your grocery run. Scan a barcode or type in a food. See the sugar content right away. Get a clear traffic-light rating. 5Sugar shows you the one number that matters at the shelf – no jargon, no ads, no forced sign-up. WHO IS 5SUGAR FOR? • Anyone who wants to keep an eye on sugar in everyday life. • Anyone cutting back on sugar who wants to spot hidden sugar in the supermarket. WHY 5SUGAR? • One number, one traffic light. No flood of additives, no color codes, no confusion. You see sugar per 100 g or 100 ml – and whether it fits your goal. • Two data sources. We combine the open Open Food Facts database (over 3 million products) with the German Federal Food Code BLS 4.0 – scientifically compiled average values from the Max Rubner-Institut for more than 7,000 basic ingredients. • Built from experience. Made by a founder who has prediabetes himself and knows what matters when shopping. WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH 5SUGAR Scan barcodes – unlimited, no account Point the camera at the barcode and see the sugar content and traffic light right away. No sign-in, no payment details, no limit. Type in foods – for everything without a barcode Type a food such as “Gurke” (cucumber) or “Haferflocken” (oats) and get a clear sugar value even for basic ingredients without packaging. Multi-word entries like “Vollkornpizza mit Tomatensoße” are understood too. Note: the food search currently uses German food names. If there is no reliable data, the result stays empty instead of guessing. Clear traffic-light rating The rating follows the 5 g rule: solid foods with up to 5 g of sugar per 100 g are green. For liquids we apply a stricter limit of 1.5 g per 100 ml. Nutrition at a glance Sugar, fat, salt, carbohydrates and protein, plus a vegan note where the database provides it. Sugar means total sugars per 100 g or 100 ml. Reliable values, clearly labeled Values from the BLS are marked “BLS 4.0”. Official Open Food Facts estimates are marked “approx.” (≈). If data is missing, we say “no data” – and never invent zeros. Safe list and shopping lists With a free account you can save good products in your Safe List (up to 10) and create shopping lists – for your next shop or to share with family and friends. History and offline mode Your scans are stored on your device. Reopen recently checked products any time – even without internet. Community product reports A product missing or a value looks wrong? Report it right from the app. We review and add it, so the database grows for everyone. Guides and tips More than 70 easy-to-read articles about sugar, carbohydrates and nutrition (in German). Available in 8 languages German, English, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish. FREE TO USE The barcode scanner with traffic light is free and works without signing up. An account is optional and only needed for the Safe List and shopping lists. More features will follow, some of them paid – the core stays free. IMPORTANT NOTE 5Sugar is an information service and does not replace medical or nutritional advice. Product data comes from open databases (Open Food Facts and BLS 4.0) and may contain errors. When in doubt, check the packaging. ABOUT THE FOUNDER I’m Bernd Korz, founder of alugha and author of over 1,000 articles for heise, t3n, GIGA and other publications. I have prediabetes myself and have paid close attention to sugar and exercise for four years. That experience is built into 5Sugar. LEARN MORE Web app: app.5sugar.com – Guides and blog: 5sugar.com

Version 1.2 – What’s new Just type in a food Don’t know the barcode? Simply type a food into the search field – for example “Gurke”, “Salatgurke” or “Gurken”. For basic ingredients without packaging, the app now shows the sugar content with a traffic-light rating. Multi-word entries like “Vollkornpizza mit Tomatensoße” or “Salzgetrocknete Oliven” are understood and matched to the most fitting food. Spelling variants, plurals and compound words are recognized automatically. Food search currently uses German food names. If there is no reliable data, the result stays empty instead of guessing. Two nutrition data sources instead of one Besides the Open Food Facts database, 5Sugar now also uses the German Federal Food Code (BLS) 4.0 – the German nutrient database of the Max Rubner-Institut with scientifically compiled average values for more than 7,000 basic ingredients. If Open Food Facts has no nutrition values for a product, the BLS data is used automatically. Values that come from the BLS are labeled “BLS 4.0”. More reliable values at the shelf If nutrition values are missing in the database, the app now shows official Open Food Facts estimates, marked “approx.” (≈). If all data is missing, the traffic light stays neutral on purpose – the app does not invent values. Always up to date Product data is refreshed regularly, so corrections from the Open Food Facts community and new BLS data reach you quickly. Transparency about data sources Under “Datenquellen” in your profile you will find all details about the databases we use and their licenses – including the BLS attribution of the Max Rubner-Institut. Details and stability Reworked profile view, corrected display of missing nutrition values (“no data” instead of 0.0 g), more precise search matches for food searches, improvements to the Safe List and shopping lists, and general stability and performance improvements. We’d love to hear your feedback right from the app.
