I’ve been learning Brazilian Portuguese on and off for years, have tried Duolingo, Anki Pimsleur, PortuguesePod101, textbooks, and bar none this is the best and most comprehensive app on the app on the market. It uses spaced repetition (SRS) to help you memorize vocabulary and grammar concepts, and helps you train your ear with listening exercises. If you use Anki, you can even import your Anki cards into the app.The grammar explanations are simple and have exercises for each lesson, that you drill over and over again on an SRS schedule until you reach “mastery” in them, just as with vocabulary and listening exercises. Based on how well you do when your exercises come up for review Falando gives you a rating of how well you know it of Aluno all the way up to Mestre. This style of learning I think is much better than learning grammar from dry textbooks.All the content is also graded by CEFR level, which you don’t get in any other app. And you advance through CEFR ranks according to how much A1 listening/vocabulary/grammar exercises you have reached “professor” rank in, which is one rank below Mestre.To top it off, this app also includes comprehensible input training, which is pretty much unheard of in other language learning apps that train vocabulary. It does in the form of suggested YouTube content which it grades according to CEFR difficulty A1 through C2. Live transcripts are generated for the videos based on the video’s captions, and vocabulary that you haven’t learned yet will be highlighted that you can add to your reviews. You can also copy and paste videos from Brazilian Portuguese YouTube channels that you’re interested in, and it will do the same thing! It will generate a transcript with vocabulary, and give your imported video a CEFR grade.You can also copy and paste text or upload a document with written content of your choice, and it will do the same thing. Just phenomenal, and so happy they came out with the iOS version.
