AOS – Authorship Order Score

13-item co-author ranking tool

Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Rate every co-author against a validated 13-item framework to get a fair authorship order. Authorship order on a paper can turn into the most awkward conversation in research — who did "enough" to be first author, second, or senior author? Authorship Order Score (AOS) takes the politics out of it by scoring every contributor against a validated, published academic instrument instead of gut feel or seniority. For each co-author, rate their involvement — None, Partial, or Full — across the 13 criteria of the Authorship Order Score, a tool developed and validated through a three-round Delphi study and a cross-sectional survey of 132 faculty members (Masud et al., Health Professions Education, 2020). The 13 items span every phase of a research project — Conception, Planning, Execution, and Writing & Publication — each weighted by how strongly the validation study's participants agreed it matters. The app does the math for you, live, and instantly ranks every author from highest to lowest score to suggest a fair byline order. WHY RESEARCHERS USE IT • Objective, not political — decisions are backed by a peer-reviewed instrument, not tenure or who asked first • Live scoring — watch the score update as you rate each of the 13 items • Automatic ranking — add every co-author and get a suggested order in seconds • Full transparency — an in-app methodology screen shows exactly how each score is calculated and cites the source study • Private by design — no account, no sign-up, nothing leaves your device • Built for real research teams — PIs, co-authors, residents, grad students, and journal editors alike Whether you're finalizing authorship before submission, mediating a dispute between co-authors, or just want a defensible record of how you assigned author order, AOS gives you a fast, consistent, and citable answer. AOS is an independent, unofficial implementation of the published Authorship Order Score criteria (Masud N, Masuadi E, Moukaddem A, Omair A, Mohamud M, Al Dubayee M, Althubaiti A, Alnamshan MK, Bawazeer M, AlJasser MI. "Development and Validation of Authorship Order Score (AOS) for Scientific Publication." Health Professions Education, 6(2020): 434–443) and is not affiliated with the original authors.
