Unredacted: Cold War

1945 to 1991, from the files

The Cold War as one system with two halves, taught from the archives that have since opened. Unredacted: Cold War is a four-year curriculum: 100 lessons from the wartime conferences of 1945 to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. It teaches the confrontation as one system rather than as a story with a hero. Both capitals ran covert action, both armed clients who committed atrocities, both lied to their own publics about what their weapons could do, and both built machinery to keep the other from ending the world by accident. The app says so in both directions, and it does not manufacture symmetries that were not there: the Warsaw Pact invaded its own members, and no amount of even handedness makes that equivalent to anything NATO did to France. The coups are taught from the countries they happened to. Iran in 1953 is Mosaddegh and the oil nationalisation, not the Dulles brothers as American characters. Guatemala is Decree 900. Chile is Allende's programme and the Chilean military. WHAT IS INSIDE 100 lessons across four years, each 15 to 25 minutes, with on-device narration 60 profiles: general secretaries and presidents, the case officers who ran the operations, the physicists who built the weapons, and the dissidents who used their own states' signatures against them 866 glossary terms, cross-linked to the lessons that use them 20 quizzes with worked explanations for every answer 18 documented episodes, each one listing the record it rests on Spaced repetition that schedules the terms you keep forgetting Bookmarks and notes on any lesson, profile or term Three Home Screen widgets: a quote, a term and a figure, each changing daily HOW IT TEACHES The standard is documentation. This is the rare twentieth century subject where the archives genuinely opened: the Soviet and East German files after 1991, the CIA's CREST release, the Foreign Relations of the United States volumes, the National Security Archive's litigation, the Wilson Center's translated collections. Where the record is open the lesson cites it, and where it is still closed the lesson says so rather than filling the gap. Where historians disagree, on who began it, on whether the build up of the 1980s ended it, on how close Able Archer came, the lesson gives the competing readings and names who holds what. Where a familiar story is wrong it gets corrected, including when the correction is inconvenient: Khrushchev's line about burying you is a claim about historical succession, not a nuclear threat, and the mistranslation shaped American threat perception for a decade. FREE AND PAID The first ten lessons are free. One purchase of $9.99 unlocks the remaining 90 and everything else, permanently. There is no subscription, there are no ads, and there is no account to create. Family Sharing is supported. EVERY CLAIM IS SOURCED Each lesson ends with its primary sources and further reading. Every glossary term, researcher profile and classic study shows the published work behind it, and the full bibliography is one tap away in the Library. None of the sources are behind the unlock. OFFLINE BY DESIGN The app makes no network connections of its own. Every lesson, profile, glossary entry, quiz and case study is bundled in the download, so the whole course works in airplane mode. Nothing you read or write here leaves your device. Tapping a citation is the one exception: that opens the reference in your browser.
