Unredacted: Civil War

1846 to 1877, from the record

The war over slavery, taught from the documents the men who started it wrote down. Unredacted: Civil War is a four-year curriculum: 100 lessons from the territorial crisis of 1846 to the end of Reconstruction in 1877. It teaches the war as a war over slavery, because that is what the people who started it said it was. The declarations of causes and the secession commissioners are quoted at length in Year 1, in their own words, and the app returns to them whenever a later claim about states' rights needs testing against the documents of 1860 and 1861. It also teaches four million enslaved people as actors rather than as the war's subject matter. Self emancipation began before the Proclamation and made it enforceable, and the app follows that sequence in the order it happened, which is the reverse of the order the popular account gives. It ends in 1877 rather than 1865, because the Confederacy lost the war and won the settlement, and a course that stops at Appomattox teaches the first half of a sentence. WHAT IS INSIDE 100 lessons across four years, each 15 to 25 minutes, with on-device narration 60 profiles: presidents and generals, the enslaved people who walked into Union lines and changed the war's purpose, the nurses and surgeons, the congressmen who wrote the amendments, and the historians still arguing about it 786 glossary terms, cross-linked to the lessons that use them 20 quizzes with worked explanations for every answer 18 documented episodes, each one listing the record it rests on Spaced repetition that schedules the terms you keep forgetting Bookmarks and notes on any lesson, profile or term Three Home Screen widgets: a quote, a term and a figure, each changing daily HOW IT TEACHES The standard is documentation. Where historians disagree, on the death toll, on whether emancipation was inevitable, on how far Reconstruction succeeded before it was overthrown, the lesson gives the competing readings and names who holds what. The traditional figure of 620,000 dead comes from Livermore and Fox in the 1880s; J. David Hacker's census based estimate of 650,000 to 850,000 is now widely accepted, and the app teaches the revision as an example of evidence working. Where a familiar story is wrong it gets corrected in either direction: Sherman's March destroyed far less housing than popular accounts claim, and the black Confederate soldier is a myth with an organised modern constituency. The Lost Cause is treated as a subject rather than as a rival account, and Year 4 covers how it was manufactured, by whom, and what it was for. FREE AND PAID The first ten lessons are free. One purchase of $9.99 unlocks the remaining 90 and everything else, permanently. There is no subscription, there are no ads, and there is no account to create. Family Sharing is supported. EVERY CLAIM IS SOURCED Each lesson ends with its primary sources and further reading. Every glossary term, researcher profile and classic study shows the published work behind it, and the full bibliography is one tap away in the Library. None of the sources are behind the unlock. OFFLINE BY DESIGN The app makes no network connections of its own. Every lesson, profile, glossary entry, quiz and case study is bundled in the download, so the whole course works in airplane mode. Nothing you read or write here leaves your device. Tapping a citation is the one exception: that opens the reference in your browser.
