iPhone
Point the phone at the sky and watch the sun move through the day. Then point it off the balcony and read off exactly which hours it gets sun.
Where will the sun be at three o'clock? Will it reach the balcony in April?
Find the Sun answers both, on the spot.
SEE THE SUN'S PATH THROUGH YOUR CAMERA
Hold the phone up and the sun's path is drawn over what you see, with the hours
marked along it. Drag the time slider and the sun moves through the day — you
watch it clear the rooftop opposite, or fail to.
Pick any date and see the same thing for midsummer, for December, for the day
you move in.
WHEN IS IT SUNNY HERE?
Stand on the balcony, the patio, the corner of the garden you were thinking of
putting a table. Point the phone the way it faces, tilt until the line sits on
the rooftops opposite, and the answer is already there: the hours the sun
actually reaches that exact spot.
Turn around and the numbers follow you. Tilt up and watch the building opposite
eat the morning. Nothing to start, nothing to finish.
Not sunrise and sunset for your city. The hours for that place, with what
stands in the way taken into account.
Save it, and see how it changes across the year: which months give sun, when
the first sun arrives, when the last of it leaves.
BUILT ON ASTRONOMY, NOT ESTIMATES
The sun's position is calculated on your phone with the same algorithm
almanacs use, accurate to a hundredth of a degree. It works anywhere on earth,
including where the sun doesn't set in June or rise in December.
EVERYTHING STAYS ON YOUR PHONE
No account, no sign-up. Your position is used to calculate the sun and never
leaves the device. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
WHAT THE APP DOES
• The sun's path over your camera view, at any hour of any day
• A time slider that moves the sun through the day
• Point the phone at a spot and read off the hours it gets sun
• The sunniest months for that place, across the year
• Sunrise, solar noon, sunset, daylight length, golden hour, twilight
• Works without a connection
FREE, WITH ADS
The app is free and paid for by a strip of ads. If you'd rather not see them,
you can buy them away once — no subscription, nothing that renews.
WORTH KNOWING
In the camera view, north comes from the phone's compass, and a few degrees off
is normal — more if you're standing next to metal. The app shows where the sun
is, not whether clouds are in the way.
