The Gogolis
Simple play for little hands
Free
Playlists on Listen, and songs that play on with the screen locked. Each child can now have a language and a light or dark look of their own.
The Gogolis are six small characters, Gambo, Poff, Nibs, Lilly, Toti and Mimi, who sing children through letters, numbers, colours, animals and the ordinary moments of a day.
This app is simple play for children roughly aged one to four. Steer an ant along a winding trail and pick up crumbs on the way. Crack a big egg and see what is inside. Spin a striped ball and see which Gogoli comes to say something. Touch the balls a Gogoli asks for, find the letters on a wooden block, spell a word with letter blocks, listen to an animal and find it, turn two cards over to find a pair, and feed Mimi, who turns the colour of every bite.
There are no scores and no way to lose, and no timer unless a grown-up turns one on for Ant trail. Nothing nags a child to keep playing, and nothing asks them to fetch a grown-up with a credit card.
Grown-ups add each child with a name, a Gogoli and, if they like, a birth year, choose which games, videos and songs that child can open, and can give each child a language and a light or dark look of their own. Every one of the Gogolis' videos and songs has a page in the app that says what it is about, shows its words and plays a short preview when pressed, and new ones appear as soon as they are out, without an update. Listen has playlists that play their songs' previews one after another, and a song keeps playing with the screen locked. The whole video or song opens on YouTube, Spotify or Apple Music, outside the app, only after a question for a grown-up. The Grown-ups tab, with every setting, sits behind the same question. The app speaks 23 languages; the songs, their titles and the characters' names stay in English.
No ads, no tracking, no account, and nothing to buy inside it. It works with no internet connection. When it opens, it asks our own server for new videos, songs and news, and a preview comes from the same server only when someone presses play; neither request says anything about who is asking. To learn which games, videos and songs children enjoy, the app counts what is opened and for how long, and sends those counts to our own server. They carry no name, no ID for the child, the phone or the install, and no location, and a grown-up can switch them off. Everything else the app keeps, each child's name and birth year included, stays on your device and is never sent to us.
The Gogolis are AI-generated: characters, music and animation. The lyrics are co-written by a person and AI, and a human chooses the final words. Every character and story choice is a human one. We would rather tell you that than have you wonder.
