SSmd: Markdown Editor
Notes, reading & local history
Only for Mac
Free
Mac
Make room for your words. Choose a reading style that feels right, compare earlier drafts side by side, and keep working with ordinary Markdown files.
Write in Markdown. Read in comfort. See what changed.
SSmd is a native Markdown editor for Mac, with reading themes and side-by-side Local History. Work with ordinary files, with no SSmd account required.
WRITE WITHOUT THE CLUTTER
See headings, lists, tables, code blocks, formulas, images, and footnotes as you write. Use familiar shortcuts or the formatting panel to shape your text.
MAKE READING YOUR OWN
Choose from four paper colors and System, Serif, Mono, or Rounded type. Adjust text size and spacing, navigate with the outline, and fold sections to focus on what matters.
REVISIT AN EARLIER DRAFT
Compare saved revisions side by side or in a unified view. See changes within a line and restore earlier content. Local History stays on your Mac; it is not cloud backup.
KEEP RELATED WORK TOGETHER
Organize documents into Spaces, pin the files you return to, and open two documents side by side for reference.
BRING IN YOUR MATERIAL
Press Command-P to find a document or convert a supported web page, Word document, or spreadsheet into Markdown. Some websites require sign-in or verification and cannot be imported directly.
TAKE YOUR WORDS WITH YOU
Export Markdown or PDF, or copy your text as plain text or Markdown. Your documents remain usable outside SSmd.
Open a document and make room for your next idea.
English and Simplified Chinese interfaces. Requires macOS 14 or later. Version 0.6 requires no purchase or subscription. Future pricing and early-bird terms will be announced separately.

Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Fixes
• When editing a table, pressing Tab or clicking another cell or table could lose what you had just typed and leave the edit box behind. Your text is now saved before the edit moves on. Thanks to the user who reported it.
• After editing one table or typing above it, editing a later table could put the change in the wrong place.
• A long path pasted into Smart Open (Command-P) no longer wraps out of sight; the field scrolls sideways instead.
Opening files
• SSmd now appears under Open With when you Control-click a Markdown file in Finder. To make it your default Markdown app, see Settings > General > Default App.
• Open Document lists only Markdown files.
• When a document you opened on its own shows images from its folder, SSmd asks once for access to that folder. After that the images appear, and pasted or inserted images are saved beside the document.
Typing
• Straight quotes stay straight. Turn on smart quotes in Edit > Substitutions if you prefer them.
Chinese
• Table menus and the Open and Save panels are now translated.
