Crabitat: Hermit Crab Care
Care reference and daily log
Free · In‑App Purchases
Every emergency protocol is free, forever, and works with no signal. Search a food and get safe, caution or avoid — with the sources named, including when they disagree.
Crabitat is a hermit crab care reference that also keeps your log.
Most tracking apps are a log with a few tips bolted on. This one is the other way round: the care information came first, and the tracking is there because you open the app daily anyway.
FOOD DATABASE
Search by name and get an answer. Every entry says safe, caution or avoid — three states, not two, because keepers genuinely disagree about some foods and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Where sources differ, Crabitat names both and tells you which one it follows.
Search knows the other names for things, so cilantro finds coriander and prawn finds shrimp. There is a separate ingredient watchlist for reading labels, because a database of foods cannot tell you what is inside a bag of commercial pellets.
EMERGENCIES
Its own tab, works with no signal, and free forever — no purchase, no account, no exceptions. Search it the way you would say it: "can't find my crab", "he came out without a shell".
Covers naked crab, emergency energy mix, isolating a crab, digging up a molter, flooding, mold, condensation, humidity too high, grain mites, fungus gnats, ants, cockroaches, moving crabs, and keeping the tank warm through a power cut. There is also a page on what is NOT an emergency — the one that saves the most crabs.
FOUR CALCULATORS, ALL FREE
Tank size — count your crabs, get the minimum size and the nearest standard tank.
Substrate — bags of play sand, coir bricks, and how much you need for a proper depth.
Shell size — enter a caliper measurement in decimals or in sixteenths and get the opening range to shop for, adjusted for D-shaped and oval shells.
Hygrometer calibration — the 24-hour salt test, guided, and the offset is then applied to every humidity reading you log, so every later reading is right.
DAILY TRACKING
Today answers "what needs doing" before anything else: overdue first, then due today, then what happened recently. Logging is one tap.
Feeding is not a text box. You pick from the food database, so Crabitat can show you what has and has not come up lately. Save a combination you feed often and reuse it in a tap.
MOLTING
Log the day they went down and Crabitat holds a clear "this is normal, do not dig them up" state. There is no countdown and no progress bar, on purpose: a big crab can be under for a year, and a bar counting down to a made-up date is how molting crabs get dug up.
REMINDERS
Feeding, fresh water, salt water, substrate, and temperature and humidity checks. Set per tank, on the days you choose, at the time you choose. They stay at the time you picked through daylight saving, and they come back after a restart.
SHARED CARE
Going away? Send someone a code. They see what is due, they can log what they do, and every entry records who made it. They cannot change your settings or delete anything, and you can remove their access whenever you like.
FREE, AND WHAT IS NOT
No ads. Not ever, and not in the paid tier either.
Free forever: the entire care reference, the whole food database, every emergency page, all four calculators, the setup checklist, the ingredient watchlist, one tank with as many crabs as you keep, and logging with the last 30 days of history.
Crabitat Pro is a single purchase — not a subscription — and adds unlimited tanks, your full log history, temperature and humidity graphs, shared care, saved food mixes, the feeding calendar, data export, and more than five reminders.
ABOUT THE CARE INFORMATION
It comes from documents shared in a hermit crab keeping group, restated in Crabitat's own words with the source named on every screen. Where the group's files and other sources disagree, the app shows you both rather than quietly picking one.
Crabitat is not veterinary advice
Crabitat now works in metric, and the shell size calculator has arrived.
Every measurement in the app has a metric equivalent — temperatures, tank volumes, tank dimensions, substrate depth, and the shell measurements down to the millimetre. Not some of them. If a number is shown anywhere in the app, it is shown in the units you actually use.
The first time you open this version, Crabitat picks your system from your device's region. If that means switching you to metric, it tells you it has rather than asking you to choose before you can get in — and you can change it whenever you like in Settings.
Your existing records are untouched. Every reading, tank and log you have already saved stays exactly as you entered it. The change is in how measurements are displayed and typed in, not in what is stored.
Where it matters, you get both. Care guidance and the tank and shell calculators show both systems, because those are numbers you read once and then act on — you might be standing in a shop looking at a product label in the other system. The places you glance at repeatedly, like the tank card and the history graph, show one, so the screen stays readable.
The shell size calculator is now here. Enter a crab's weight or its current shell length and it suggests the shell sizes to offer, in inches and fractions or in millimetres. It has been part of what Crabitat offers for a while, and on iOS it was simply missing — the data shipped inside the app and nothing ever read it.
Terms and Privacy Policy are now readable inside the app, in full and offline, including on the purchase screen where you are actually being asked to agree to them. Previously they were links out to the website, which is no help on a plane or a bad connection.
The Pro screen now lists everything Pro includes. It was showing three of the eight features.
Also fixed:
• A temperature you logged could read back very slightly different — a reading entered as 29°C could come back as 28.9°C. It was being rounded before it was converted. It is not any more.
• Saving an edit to a tank looked as though it had been discarded: the screen behind kept showing the old details until you left and came back. It updates immediately now.
• Opening a tank and pressing Save no longer moves its dimensions. If you edited a tank's name and saved without touching its measurements, they could shift very slightly.
• Warnings in the care articles now look like warnings. Every highlighted note — including the ones about things that can harm a crab — was being drawn in the same mild blue as general information.
• Shell size suggestions now work for the largest shells. The biggest entries describe a minimum size rather than an exact one, and searching near them returned nothing at all.
