Sudoku Lab is a sudoku that teaches you to solve, instead of handing you the answer.
Most sudoku apps know one kind of hint: "There is a 7 here." You learn nothing from that. Sudoku Lab explains the next logical step instead, one stage at a time and as far as you want.
HINTS IN STAGES
1. First just the name of the technique: "Next step: X-Wing."
2. Then the area it is hiding in. Can you find the pattern yourself now?
3. Then the full explanation, step by step to click through. Each step marks exactly the cells it is about.
You can check every step on the board: whatever rules something out is marked, or it says which earlier step something follows from. The app never looks at the solution to do this.
You can also see an elimination as a chain of contradiction: "Suppose the 5 really were here ..." Then the app plays out the moves that have to follow, until the contradiction shows.
And if you only want to know why a digit doesn't fit somewhere: select the cell, long-press the digit. The app explains it and marks what is in the way.
35 TECHNIQUES
From Full House and Naked Single through Locked Candidates, Pairs and Triples to X-Wing, Skyscraper, Empty Rectangle, Swordfish, finned fish, XY-, XYZ-, W- and WXYZ-Wing, Unique Rectangle types 1 to 4, Hidden Rectangle, BUG+1, Simple Coloring, Sue de Coq, XY-Chain, ALS-XZ and AIC. AIC is the general chain form, and most named patterns are special cases of it.
Every single one has practice positions, so you never get stuck on the learning path.
Elsewhere, difficulty usually means counting the given numbers. Here the five levels follow the hardest technique a puzzle needs. So a "hard" really does mean triples and X-Wing, not just an easy puzzle with fewer numbers. And the app can solve every puzzle all the way through itself, so in every position there is a next step it can explain to you.
LEARNING PATH
A route through every technique, one at a time. You read the lesson, then practise on positions where that technique is exactly what comes next, without having to hunt for them. The app keeps track of what you can do and suggests a refresher before you forget it.
DAILY, STREAK, QUESTS
A puzzle every day. Every week brings two easy, two medium, two hard and one expert. Which day is which, you find out on the day. You can catch up on missed days at any time. On top of that: a monthly calendar with trophies, three quests a day, and a 3-minute mode for fast pattern spotting.
Your streak forgives the odd missed day: you earn freezes by playing, and if the streak does break, it only falls back, not to zero. Freezes can never be bought.
CONTROLS
- Corner and centre notes, like on paper
- Cell-first or digit-first; in notes mode, swiping fills whole runs
- Unlimited undo and redo
- Error checking your way: off, rule violations only, or a running comparison with the solution
- Your choice of displays below the board: progress, quests, pace, candidate preview
- Available in English, German and Portuguese, with screen-reader labels on every cell
WHAT THERE ISN'T
No ads. No purchases. No mistake counter. No game over. No hearts, no energy, no sign-up. No advertising ID, no tracking across app boundaries. The app works offline, and all 10,053 puzzles are already on board.
You can help out anonymously if you like: we ask exactly once whether we may count where people get stuck. It hangs on a random number, never on you, and if you say no, you don't miss out on anything.
Sudoku Lab is for everyone who wants to get better at sudoku.
Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Fixed: Technique Rush asks in your language and accepts every correct cell.
A hint now first tells you where to look instead of naming the technique right away. The notes that matter are highlighted, and every further hint narrows the spot. What a hint does for you counts partly for your rating. In practice a new button narrows it down, and every lesson shows how to find the pattern. New: at the end of each month I ask briefly how you like the app.
