GhostDeck is an offline music player for your Mac that turns every track into a place.
Behind your album cover, a jewel case turns slowly over a living low-poly world that listens to the music: a neon grid rolling toward a striped sun, a moonlit river between endless pines, dunes at dusk with a chrome skull on the horizon, a rain-soaked avenue of shopfronts and neon, or the murky floor of a deep sea where something big passes behind you. Five worlds, each with its own palette for the deck, and a hue shift that recolours any of them.
THE DECK
The layout you remember from the late nineties, drawn one pixel at a time. A main deck with LED time, a 32-band spectrum, a scrolling title and transport buttons. A ten-band equalizer with preamp, live response curve and presets. A playlist with shuffle, repeat, and M3U import and export. The modules are separate windows that dock together like magnets and move as one, or snap into any corner of the screen. Pick a pixel scale from 1x to 4x to fit any screen.
FIVE WORLDS
• Synthwave: audio-reactive terrain built from the live spectrum
• Dark Forest: real reflections in a meandering river, procedural bark, needles and moss
• Dunes: a public-domain skull mesh rendered as polished chrome, with eyes that light the sand
• Neon City: textured towers, shopfronts, rooftop billboards, wet asphalt, and a ticker spelling your track
• Deep Sea: caustics and light shafts, a school of fish, a wreck, and a lure pulsing in the dark
CLASSIC SKINS
Bring the .wsz skins you collected years ago. Import one from View > Skin (Shift-Command-K) or drop it on any window: the deck, equalizer and playlist are drawn from the skin's own bitmaps, colours and font, while the five worlds keep playing behind your album. Command-K switches skins, and GhostDeck's own look is always one step away. GhostDeck ships no skins; you bring your own.
YOUR FILES, OFFLINE
MP3, AAC and M4A, FLAC, Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF, CAF and AC3, with gapless playback for albums in the same format. Drop files or folders onto any window, or open them from the File menu. Tags and embedded artwork are read from your files, including FLAC; a cover image next to the track works too. Otherwise you get a generated retro sleeve that is unique to the title.
MADE THE HARD WAY
No web view, no game engine, no downloaded assets. GhostDeck is a small native app with its own Metal renderer: a retro pixel grid, vertex snap, dither, fog and planar reflections. Every world texture is generated on your Mac at launch; the one bundled asset is a public-domain skull mesh. It idles at a few percent of one core and drops to 30 frames per second when nothing is playing. An optional Low Power Rendering mode halves that again.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
No account, no analytics, no network access at all. The app is sandboxed and only ever sees the folders you open. Media keys and the Now Playing widget work as you expect.
KEYBOARD FIRST
Z, X, C, V and B for transport, arrow keys for seek and volume, S and R for shuffle and repeat, L for the playlist.
