The first thirty accounts get everything, for nothing, while we finish building. One real object a day, from the museum collections, with what it has meant.
One Symbol publishes one symbol a day.
Each day brings a single real object: a carved relief, a manuscript page, a woven roundel, a painted folio, photographed from a museum collection. With it come about 250 words on what the symbol it carries has meant to the people who used it, and where that meaning came from.
Every image is a real object in the public domain or released under CC0, credited to the collection that holds it. No image in One Symbol is generated by a machine.
Today's symbol and the previous seven days are free to read, always, with no account needed.
THE KNOT
Every entry ends on the part that is contested, unresolved or strange. A winged god standing in a broken egg that nobody can securely identify. A labyrinth drawn in a book of flower studies. A tree of life that no Assyrian ever left a name for.
Readings are attributed to the people who made them. Jung, Neumann, Eliade and Campbell appear here, and so do the archaeologists and philologists who disagree with them. Where the original meaning is unknown, it is left unknown.
THE THREADS
Symbols do not sit still. A serpent leads to a circle, a circle to a centre, a centre to an axis, an axis to a tree. Every entry links to the others that share its motifs, and a graph view draws the whole archive as it grows: objects four thousand years and five continents apart, joined by the ideas they have in common.
This is the part no other daily-object app has, and it is the reason the archive is worth keeping rather than reading once.
A SUBSCRIPTION OPENS
The full archive back to the first entry, the long essay under every symbol, unlimited saving and unlimited search, and a reading streak that tracks the days you have kept the habit and unlocks three colour schemes and app icons along the way.
WHAT IS NOT HERE
No ads. No infinite feed.
One Symbol assumes you have 5-10 minutes and would like to spend them on something that will still be interesting in a year.
ALSO
- The day's symbol by email at an hour you choose, if you want it
- Light and dark, set by you
WHO IT IS FOR
Anyone who has read Jung or Campbell or Eliade and wanted something to do with it the next morning. Anyone who likes museums and finds the labels too short. Anyone who would rather know one thing properly than skim ten.
