CloudBak: Backup App

Cloud backup to your NAS

Only for Mac

Free

Mac

Back up all of iCloud Drive to your NAS or own drive — even files only in iCloud. CloudBak downloads a few at a time, checks every copy, then frees the space again. CloudBak copies everything in your iCloud Drive to a folder on your NAS or your own drive, so your files are always on hardware you control — even when your Mac hasn't room to hold them all. BACKS UP FILES THAT ONLY LIVE IN ICLOUD With Optimize Mac Storage, many of your files are only in iCloud, not on your Mac. Backing them up normally means downloading them all first, which a Mac without the room can't do. CloudBak downloads them a few at a time, within a temporary space budget you set, copies each one across, then returns it to the cloud so it stops using space. A backup pauses by itself if free space runs low, and carries on once there's room. EVERY COPY IS CHECKED Each file is copied, read back and compared against the original before it counts as backed up. Verify Backup checks every copy is still there and unchanged, and a full check compares checksums, catching damage that didn't change a file's size. Anything missing or changed is copied again next backup. KEEPS WHAT YOU DELETE When a file changes or is deleted from iCloud Drive, the old copy moves to a dated archive and is kept for as long as you choose. If a great many files disappear from iCloud Drive at once, CloudBak leaves their copies alone and reports it under Issues: that usually means something is wrong, not that you deleted them. GET FILES BACK IN A FEW CLICKS Browse the backup, or any archived date, and restore files or whole folders where they came from or to a folder you choose. Pick one file to see its earlier versions. Nothing is overwritten unless you say so: keep both, replace, or skip. RUNS ON ITS OWN Back up daily or weekly at a time you choose, with scheduled backups held while your Mac is on battery or a metered connection. If your Mac is asleep at the scheduled time, the backup starts soon after it wakes. CloudBak lives in the menu bar and can open at login, so backups keep running with its window closed. HANDLES THE AWKWARD PARTS • If a backup is stopped, or your Mac quits or restarts, the next one continues from there — nothing copied is copied twice. • Reconnects to the share by itself if it disconnects partway through a backup. • Point it at a folder that already holds a backup — a new Mac, or a bigger drive — and it recognizes the copies there instead of making them again. • Names your destination won't accept, such as those with colons or question marks, can be saved under a safe name. The iCloud Drive original keeps its own. • Pages, Keynote and GarageBand documents are kept whole, earlier versions and all. • Copies keep the dates of the originals, so a file made years ago still says so, even restored. • Lists anything it couldn't finish under Issues, with what to do: retry, skip, or allow a file larger than the budget. SEE EXACTLY WHAT'S HAPPENING Activity shows each file as it's downloaded, copied, checked and freed, with speeds and time left. History keeps every backup, with a sortable log you can export. CHOOSE WHAT TO BACK UP Turn off any folder you don't need, and skip files by name anywhere they appear, like .DS_Store or *.tmp. Desktop, Documents and the folders apps like Pages and Numbers keep in iCloud Drive each need permission of their own. CloudBak finds them and lists them, with a switch each. WHERE BACKUPS GO Connect to a shared folder by name, like nas.local/Backups, choose one you've already connected to in Finder, or pick a folder on a drive attached to your Mac. CloudBak tests it first: that it can write there, how fast it is, and how much room is left. Change it later and CloudBak says what that means before anything moves. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Your files go straight from your Mac to the folder you chose. CloudBak has no account and no servers, and reaches only the folders you choose. Backing up only reads iCloud Drive and never changes or deletes anything there. Restoring is the one time CloudBak writes to it: restored files are added back, and if you choose Replace, the file already there moves to the Trash.
