If you keep a log on eight days or fewer out of any 30, if you only need a sheet on the days you run past the 150 air-mile radius, this is the log book you used to keep in the door pocket, all of it in your phone. It never touches the engine or a satellite, and it is not a device registered with FMCSA. Who is exempt is for your carrier and FMCSA guidance to say.
05:10 AM - before you turn the key
A blank sheet is the first screen, so you can leave the header for later and start with the first line. Across is midnight to midnight, 24 hours. Down are four rows: Off Duty, Sleeper Berth, Driving, On Duty (not driving). The layout follows the 395.8 form, and those four names stay in English because that is what the officer reads. Drag a finger along a row and the ink follows, with a tick under your fingertip at every 15-minute mark, the same rhythm as a pen catching on a ruler. Wherever your hand passed, the line settles on the quarter hour, and the total on the right is filled in before you lift off. Change rows and the vertical line comes along. You can see whether the four rows add up to 24 hours. Nothing here tells you that you did well or badly. It only adds.
09:40 AM - at the scale house
Tap a point where the status changed and a field opens for the city and state. An ELD is a machine that records driving time on its own. There is no such machine in here, so nothing ever asks for your location. You type it in yourself, and a day you left blank prints the way you left it. It does not invent anything. Not one screen in the app needs the internet to open.
02:20 PM - when a line lands wrong
On paper this was correction fluid. Here you press the line and handles appear at both ends. Stretch it, shorten it, nudge it 15 minutes, change the status, erase it, undo it. On the day you only notice at quitting time that you left the radius, this is also where you fill the day back to your start time. Carrier name, main office and home terminal address, truck and trailer numbers go into the profile once. Every new sheet carries them, and only the miles and the shipping document change from day to day.
04:05 PM - roadside, window down
The inspection tab holds today and the past 7 days. Tap Show on screen and the sheet fills the display while the brightness comes up. Tap a date to open that sheet and fix it.
04:20 PM - if they ask for a printout
The PDF comes out right there. Days you never wrote a sheet for are simply left out rather than faked as blank pages. A day that never happened should not stand next to your signature. Officers ask for different things, so a paper copy in the cab is still worth carrying.
09:50 PM - closing the day
Sign your name with a finger. That is your certification that everything written is true. Touch a line after you signed and a line of text asks you to sign again. Above the sheet sits Paper logs in the last 30 days 3/8. It does not start over with the calendar month; it counts back 30 days from today, and only the days you drew Driving or On Duty go into it. Rest days with nothing but Off Duty and Sleeper Berth stay out. Nothing turns a colour or pops up when the eighth sheet arrives. It just keeps the count.
One backup file holds the sheets, the lines and the signatures, so a new phone brings it all back. Pick a month and bundle it into one PDF, and get the sheets your carrier wants to them within 13 days of finishing them. Delete everything on this phone and the PDFs you made go with it. No ads, nothing locked away. Delete the app and the backup file is still in your hands.
