Denpa Network Check
Wi-Fi Diagnostics
Free
Find out later what made your Wi-Fi drop, or slow down at a certain hour.
Denpa records what your Wi-Fi signal is doing, once a second, for up to 24 hours. Afterwards you can line up the moment it dipped with what was happening at the time.
■ By the time you measure, it has usually fixed itself
"Same room, but it drops now and then." Symptoms like these are almost always over by the time you start measuring.
While Denpa is open it reads and records these once a second:
- Signal strength
- Noise
- The gap between them (SNR)
- Transmit rate
- Traffic actually carried (download / upload)
- Channel utilization
They share one time axis, so you can find the moment things dipped and see what else was happening then. The charts zoom and scroll sideways, pointing at one shows the values at that moment, and an overview moves the range you are looking at.
■ Nearby networks, and the least busy channels
Every 10 seconds Denpa scans for nearby networks and shows which channels are in use, and how strong the devices on them are. A waterfall view with time on the vertical axis shows which devices appeared later and which disappeared.
Channels are scored from their utilization and how much the signals overlap, then listed least busy first. One is recommended only when it is clearly better than the channel you are on.
■ Diagnostics that split the path in two
Whether a stalling video is caused inside your home or beyond it is not something you can feel.
- This Mac to the first device (your router)
- The first device to the internet
Denpa measures these separately: response time, jitter, packet loss, DNS lookup time, and download and upload speed. Findings are sorted into Error, Warning and Information, each with the reason and what you can try.
Nothing is measured until you click Start diagnostics.
■ It also times a web page
Enter a URL and Denpa loads the page the way a browser does, then reports the load time, how much was transferred, and the speed over that period. The cache is cleared before every load, so repeated measurements keep the same conditions. The page is shown in the window, and clicking a link measures that URL.
■ Saving and printing
A recording saves to a .denpa file and a diagnostics result to a .denpadiag file, and both open again later. Either can be laid out on A4 as a printed sheet, or saved as a PDF.
■ What this app cannot do
- It cannot change your router settings. Its job is to narrow down the cause
- It cannot measure other devices. Everything shown is seen from this Mac
- It is not an app that makes your connection faster
- Channel utilization is reported by the access points themselves. Devices that do not report it show nothing
- A recording holds up to 24 hours. To keep it longer, save it to a file as you go
- Putting the Mac to sleep breaks the recording
■ Privacy
- Recordings, results and any file you save stay on this Mac
- Nothing is sent to the developer or a third party. No analytics, advertising or tracking
- The names (SSID) and addresses (BSSID) of nearby networks do not leave the Mac
- Recording and scanning generate no internet traffic. The app connects outward only during a diagnosis or a page measurement
- The speed test connects to Cloudflare. The full list of destinations is in the privacy policy
■ The two permissions
- Location - macOS requires it to read the network name (SSID) and what access points broadcast. The location itself is never used, recorded or sent. Without it, names and channel utilization are not shown
- Local Network - needed to measure the response time to your router. Without it, the part up to the router cannot be measured
The app runs without either of them.
■ Data used
One speed test uses 10 MB, 40 MB or 60 MB in total, whichever you choose in Settings (20 MB each way by default).
■ Requirements
macOS 15.0 or later / Apple Silicon and Intel (universal) / Japanese and English
Free. No in-app purchases, no advertising, no account registration.
