Open huge CSVs instantly, edit them safely, and keep formulas, colours and filters in a readable markdown file beside the data. Now with Find that jumps to every match.
Plaintable opens a CSV the way a document should open: instantly, in View mode, with nothing changed. Press ⌘E and the same table becomes a real editor — inline editing, unlimited undo, insert and delete rows and columns, find and replace. Save, and your file's delimiter, quoting, line endings, encoding and BOM come back exactly as they were, with only the lines you touched rewritten.
A CSV cannot hold a calculation, a colour or a hidden row. So Plaintable keeps those beside it. Open sales.csv and everything about how it is shown — column order and widths, what is hidden or pinned, number and date formats, calculated columns, hidden rows, conditional row colours, the sort and the filters — is written to sales.csv.md, a markdown file you can read, edit in any editor, diff and commit alongside the data. Change that file from somewhere else and the open window follows along. Nothing written in it ever touches the CSV.
BUILT FOR BIG FILES
The file is memory-mapped and never loaded as a string. One quote-aware pass records where each record starts; cells are decoded only as they scroll into view. Sorting and filtering permute an array of row IDs over cached column projections, so the source bytes are never copied or reordered. A million rows index in a fraction of a second; ten million open in well under one. Files of 24 MB and up show their window immediately while the index finishes in the background.
CALCULATIONS THAT STAY OUT OF YOUR DATA
Write formulas over column names — [Units] * [Price] * (1 - [Discount]). Comparisons, and/or/not, & for joining text, about fifty functions (IF, ROUND, CONCAT, DATEDIFF, MATCHES, …) and whole-column summaries (SUM, AVG, MEDIAN, DISTINCT, …) so [Total] / SUM([Total]) works. A calculated column sorts, filters and exports like any other, and is never written to the file. Formulas can also be pinned to a single cell. Errors are values, not failures: a bad formula shows #NAME? in its own cell and leaves the rest of the table alone.
FILTERS AND SORTING
A quick filter in the toolbar, per-column popovers whose contents follow the inferred type, the familiar distinct-value checklist with counts, a removable chip bar with AND/OR, multi-column sort keys with priority numbers, and named filter sets saved per file.
EDITING THAT RESPECTS THE FILE
Type-to-replace inline editing, range paste, fill down and right, case transforms, find and replace with a live count of what is about to change, insert/duplicate/delete rows, insert, rename and delete columns, and unlimited undo with real action names. An unmodified document saves byte-identically. A one-cell edit rewrites one line.

Delimiter and encoding sniffing with a re-import sheet to override it, gzip support, Quick Look previews, column statistics with a distribution sparkline, a row inspector, export to CSV/TSV/JSON/JSON Lines/Markdown/HTML, selection aggregates, crash recovery from a journal, external-change detection, and a grid that publishes itself to VoiceOver as a real table.
Plaintable is sandboxed and has no network access. Your files never leave your Mac.

• As you type, the table jumps to the first match and scrolls it into view.
• Find Next and Find Previous (⌘G / ⇧⌘G) bring every match on screen, however far down a large file it is.
• Changing the column you search in jumps to the first match in that column.
• Reopening the Find bar returns you to the match you were on.
