Tandem Gander is a PDF reader.
1. Purpose and audience. Tandem Gander is a bookshelf and a reader for medium to long PDFs: journal articles, magazines, theses, textbooks, papers, manuals. It treats a PDF the way a printed book is read: whole pages, turned one at a time or riffled with a thumb, supercharged by a second pane (or more) and PDF's table of contents for reading two places at once. The problem it solves: PDF readers built around scrolling and zooming make long reading on a large screen tiring; showing full pages only, and letting the reader cut a figure or table out into its own pane while the text continues beside it, makes it restful. It's core features helps the user keep every thing important to read within one view. There is no scrolling back or switching windows to break the flow. It's user interface also accepts input from a PlayStation DualSense controller so the reader can sit back from a large display. The audience is students, researchers and anyone who reads well-formatted PDFs on a Mac.
2. Setup and access. There is no account, no sign-in and no demo credentials. Here is a brief of the basic controls: On first launch the app asks for a folder of PDFs; a single PDF can also be opened with ⌘O. A sample document is built in: Help › Quick Start (⌘/) opens the user manual as a PDF inside the reader; it explains every control and can be used to test every feature without accessing any PDF files outside the app's package. Mouse click on the right half of the page to turn forward, the left half to turn back (or the ' and ; keys); hold the click to riffle; a two-finger horizontal swipe on the trackpad turns pages as well; space opens the table of contents (↑/↓ choose, return jumps, esc closes); ⌘D sets the anchor page (bookmark), `A` jumps to the bookmark, `o` jumps back; hold ⌥ and drag a rectangle on the page to cut a clipping (⌘= / ⌘− scale it, esc restores the page); ⌘→ opens a second pane, ⌘X closes it; r rotates a pane; ⌘, opens Settings; ⌘1 / ⌘2 switch between the shelf and the reader; ⇧⌘O chooses another folder. With a DualSense paired: the left stick riffles, L1/R1 turn one page, holding the right stick against its rim opens the table of contents, Triangle and Circle work the anchor page, Options toggles shelf and reader.
3. External services: none. The app is sandboxed with no network entitlement. It uses no analytics, no crash reporting of its own, no authentication service, no payment processor, no AI service and no data provider. This app only reads the PDFs the user chooses and writes only inside its own container to keep a cover cache, a preferences file, and an optional local diagnostics log that is off by default and that Settings can reveal and clear.
4. Regional differences: none. The app functions identically in every region. The interface is in English.
5. Regulated industry or protected material: not applicable. The app is a viewer for the user's own files and ships no third-party content; the bundled Quick Start manual is our own work. No licences or credentials are involved.
