THE EXAM
B1 Residential Building Inspector is an ICC National Certification exam: 60 multiple-choice questions, four options each, 120 minutes, no calculator, sat open book against the International Residential Code. ICC offers it against both the 2021 and the 2024 IRC. The seven content areas are Code Administration, Building Planning, Footings and Foundations, Floor Construction, Wall Construction and Coverings, Roof/Ceiling Construction, and Public Safety and Special Construction.
BUILT FOR AN OPEN-BOOK EXAM
Open book means the B1 is not really a memory test. It is a search test, under the clock. After you answer, Kalyta shows where that rule sits in your edition of the IRC: the chapter and its title, every parent heading above it, and the part of the section the provision is in. You practice the lookup, not just the answer.
CHOOSE YOUR CODE EDITION
You sit the exam against one edition, and a rule often stays put while its section number moves. Pick 2021 or 2024, and the questions, lessons and lookups are all served for that book, so a reference sends you to the right page of the copy in front of you.
EVERY CONTENT AREA
All seven content areas of ICC's published exam outline are covered, in both code editions: practice questions with worked explanations, concept lessons, and a section lookup on every question.

A rehearsal tells you how many questions you answered correctly, and nothing more. We publish no pass rates, score improvements or testimonials. Kalyta is study material, so it stays outside the exam room: ICC permits bound code books and approved references, not study guides or practice questions.
