A polar station on the ice cap, one operator on shift, and a probe on a cable going down through a glacier that keeps a steady beat. It is a rhythm game played by holding, not by tapping. Three resonance bands run down the shaft. One of them lights two ticks early, narrows to a hairline, and the instant it closes is the tick. Press the lit band ahead of time so the probe charges, then let go exactly as the band shuts. On time and fully charged counts as a resonant reading worth one and a half, so two clean releases carry you through a whole year of ice. A sloppy release does not end the run. It widens a crack along the shaft wall, a resonant reading closes that crack again, and only a crack that reaches the top collapses the layer and sends the probe back up a year. Cadence climbs from 58 a minute at the surface toward 96 at depth, levelling onto a shelf at every boundary while the timing window keeps tightening. There are 48 soundings across four ice fields, each worth three stamped marks: bottom out with no collapse, finish under 40 percent fracture, hold 88 percent accuracy. Twelve kinds of echo lie frozen in the layers and each one rewrites the rules of its layer, from a ridge that demands a fourth reading to a melt lens that cracks twice as fast. Six rig lines widen the window, slow the crack, buy a pause or light the band sooner, and three ice regimes rotate by the day. Through-Column is an endless descent scored in metres, with three rule changes offered at every landing and a price on all of them. Once per sounding the ice plays back a short pattern and waits; answer it and a page comes up with the core, 34 fragments in all, left by Éidis Krann, the operator of the previous shift, who did not come back. Nothing in the app makes a sound, so the beat reaches you through the closing band, a hairline crossing the shaft once per tick, and your thumb. Portrait, one hand, offline, no ads, no purchases, nothing leaves the device.
