Mnemesia: Flashcards & Study
Medical school revision & MCQ
Free
Mnemesia is built for medical school: the course, the cards and the exam together in one workspace, from the first year to the national ranking exam. No account and no Mnemesia server: everything stays on your devices, and it works offline.
COURSES
Import course PDFs from the Files app, iCloud Drive or other cloud storage, and organize them by year, semester, module and chapter. Annotate them directly: highlighters, text, freehand drawings. Text recognition makes the text selectable, even on scanned lecture notes. A tape laid over a line hides it: lift it to check what you remember. Apple Pencil gets its own ring of tools, and the tool island shrinks away like in Notes.
FLASHCARDS
Make a card from the open course without leaving it: front and back, cloze deletion, or image masking to quiz yourself on an anatomy plate or a physiology diagram. Spaced repetition decides what comes back, and when.
MULTIPLE-CHOICE TESTS
Build a test, take it against the clock, then go through the answers question by question: multiple choice, short answer and progressive clinical cases, images included. Every answer sheet stays available, missed questions can be retaken in one tap, and results break down by chapter. The scoring rules of the EDN (the French national medical ranking exam) are available, as well as points-based scoring for faculty exams. To practise, tick several tests: questions are spread across courses, each test keeps its own grade, and the session resumes where you left off. Past papers have their own view, PDF papers included.
J-METHOD
In the first year, each course you learn comes back at J1, J3, J7 and so on, in the calendar. Anything overdue shows at a glance.
ORGANIZING
Courses, groups, subjects, decks and tests can be ticked to move or delete them at once, or rearranged by dragging. Each subject keeps its colour across every tab.
PLANNER
Enter the exam dates: the review load spreads over the remaining days, starting with what weighs most.
EDN ITEMS
In the clinical years, a tab organizes the EDN items by specialty, and each course is linked to its item.
IPHONE, IPAD AND MAC
Turn on iCloud in Settings: courses, cards, progress and planner move from one device to another in seconds, through your own iCloud account. The iPad and the Mac each keep a full copy that works offline. Everything is on iPhone too: read and import courses, review cards, take tests, check your planner and organize it all just as on iPad or Mac.
FILES
Documents stay as files, visible in the Files app. Whatever you delete in Mnemesia goes to an Archives folder instead of being erased. Nothing is locked into a format only this app could read.
IMPORT AND EXPORT
.apkg decks import as they are, media included, with their review history, and export back to .apkg. CSV and TSV lists import too.
PRIVACY
No sign-up is required and no data is collected. Documents, cards and results stay on your devices, and in your iCloud if you turn it on.
In English and French. Designed by an engineer who is also a medical student, for medical students.
more Guided tour: on first launch, or from Settings, discover the app step by step on a sample library. Your own courses and reviews are never touched.
MCQs: bury a question you know will never come up, so it is no longer asked, and unbury it whenever you like. Retake the questions from your Mistake log as an exam. "Redo my misses" now opens its settings first. An exam completed in full during a practice session now counts on its card, and the Past papers tab stays open after an exam.
J method: your J sessions appear in the Planner grid, at the top of their day, and can be dragged to a time or another day. Their row scrolls and can be resized. From a course pack followed with the J method, a dot validates the next J.
Clearer dashboard labels, Courses shown as rows in each subject's colour, search in a course pack that now reaches distant pages, and PDFs that open on iPhone, iPad and Mac older than iOS 17.4 and macOS 14.4.

New "Exam" tab on the dashboard: group your subjects under an exam date and see where you stand. For each subject: the share of course packs covered, past papers done, latest grade and average, and a to-do list you can tick off. Exams from your Planner are suggested automatically.
MCQs: every exam you have taken shows a gauge in the colour of its latest grade out of 20, from red to green. An answer sheet handed in early keeps two grades, one over all questions and one over those answered.
Courses: groups become topics, and each course pack shows its format and page count. A course pack's table of contents is detected automatically and becomes clickable, in a workshop column and on the page itself.
Dashboard: a clearer "Today" header, and "Where I slip" as bars.

Important fix: since the previous update, Mnemesia closed right after opening on iPhone and iPad running iOS 27. It opens normally again, and all your data is intact. Thank you for your patience.
Courses: "+ Group", once named and filled, now puts every dropped course into that group.

• EDN items: track the steps of each item (rank A and B rounds, anchors, QI, DP, past papers, summary sheet, cards, or your own), with dates and statistics. An item is only checked when you decide.
• MCQs: an exam whose title says "annale" files itself under Past papers, and you can practise on several past papers at once.
• MCQs: the correction, going back, timer and scoring you choose stay the same for all your exams until you change them.
• MCQs: "Skip" now asks for confirmation, and a practice session can be deleted from the history.
• iPad and iPhone: import a whole folder without zipping it, from iCloud Drive too.
• Workspace: notes on both sides of the page and in columns, at the height you choose.
• Fixes: black screen when opening a file in Mnemesia from Files on iPad, tool caption going off screen, a step's date that couldn't be changed on iPad.
1.0.17 Oct 24
• Flashcards: today's counter shows what "Review" will actually serve you, reviews and new cards apart, with an estimated time. New cards arrive at the pace of your J0, your exam date or your study setting.
• During review, the space bar shows the answer and hides it again as often as you like.
• Dashboard: a single reminder for subjects without an exam, and your J tasks right under the tiles.
• J method: each item keeps its colour, and its number is the checkbox.
• MCQs: at the end of an exam, "n more questions" starts a part of the same size, oldest questions first, or "Retake the exam" in full.
• Workspace: split the screen into as many panes as you like, annotate photos and attachments, and "Compare" places another document on the side of your choice.
• Fixes: overlaps in review and in the day's detail, false files offered when syncing the folder.
1.0.16 Oct 20
• Apple Pencil in the workspace: a tape that hides a line and lifts to test yourself, a ring menu to switch tools, and a tool island that shrinks like in Notes.
• MCQs: tick several exams in Take, then "Practise". Questions are spread across handouts, each exam keeps its own grade, and a practice session resumes where you left off.
• Past papers: a separate view next to exams, with the papers as PDFs. An exam moves to past papers and back in one click.
• MCQ history in two views, Exams and Practice, with the average of each exam.
• Multiple selection: handouts, groups, subjects, decks and exams can be ticked, then deleted or moved at once. They can also be rearranged by dragging.
• Mnemesia folder: the folder on disk and the app now talk both ways, and nothing is erased any more: whatever you delete goes to Archives.
• iPhone: a Courses tab to read and import your handouts, and everything can be organised from the phone, just like on iPad or Mac.
• Attachments (PDF, Word, photos, voice memos) open right in the app.
• Subjects: colour, archiving and renaming also from Flashcards and MCQs; a new subject shows up there straight away, even empty.
• J method: following a course no longer marks J0 as done; you tick it the day you learn it.
• A name too long to fit scrolls on hover so you can read it in full.
• iCloud: if your other device has already stored its courses, Mnemesia offers to merge them instead of refusing.
• More reliable Apple Calendar sync, and Mnemesia tells you when a new version is available.
1.0.15 Oct 15
• J method: each subject can now have its own sequence (tight for immunology, classic for semiology), in Sequence and options. A single handout can still keep its own.
• Add to my J: handouts are grouped by subject, in its colour, with a filter and "Select all" to follow a whole subject at once.
• In clinical years, handouts and chapters can again be followed alongside the EDN items.
• iPhone: item colours display and can be picked just like on the computer, and J cards are easier to read.
• Highlighting: tapping in the margin or between two lines snaps to the nearest word.
• Margin notes: the field grows with your text.
• Planner: a week containing a late-evening event displays normally again.
• Apple Calendar: syncing no longer stops on an undated event from another calendar.
1.0.14 Oct 11
• Practice: one screen for flashcards and MCQs. Tick a whole subject or a few chapters, then choose the mode, the number of questions, the order and the scoring (EDN rules, or points on your own scale).
• MCQs: correction after each question, with its explanation, for every format.
• MCQs: going back to the previous question is now optional, in Compose and in Practice. A test taken with going back allowed counts toward no grade.
• Progressive cases, KFP and critical appraisal: always taken as one block, never split by shuffling. In the editor, drag a question from one case to another.
• Critical appraisal: attach the article as a PDF. During the test it sits next to the question, sharp at any zoom, full screen if needed.
• MCQ editor: every format is explained (single, multiple, stated number, short answer, TCS, point-and-click), and a case is created in one click with its first question.
• Doubts: add a note for yourself ("I hesitated with B"); it comes back at correction and in the mistakes notebook.
• MCQ screen: "Next test" opens one you have never taken, otherwise the oldest.
• Menu and contrast fixes.
1.0.13 Oct 9
• Imports that sort themselves: drop a semester folder (lectures, flashcards, MCQs), zipped or not; every file lands in its place, with no duplicates.
• Redesigned course annotations: one Pen (pen, marker, pencil, highlighter, eraser), text boxes (System, Serif, Times New Roman, Mono, Handwritten), shapes (rectangle, oval, line, arrow), redesigned sticky notes and margin remarks. The toolbar sits at the bottom, at the top, on a side, or anywhere you like.
• A full Mistakes page: by subject, then course, chapter or past papers. One tap reopens the course at the right page, or the MCQ question to retry.
• MCQs: flag a doubt during a test (button or D key); at correction, right answers you doubted go to the notebook just like wrong ones.
• MCQs: link a test to its course and keep past papers apart. A course's J marks come only from its own tests; past papers count for no J.
• EDN items: your own tabs (S1, S2…), named and reordered by dragging; adding items to your Js opens on the latest tab.
• Courses: hidden subjects and archives in one menu, archive a whole semester in one gesture.
• First launch: your Mnemesia folder is created in one click.
• Many fixes, especially on iPad with a finger and Apple Pencil.
1.0.12 Oct 9
What's new in 1.0.11
• Breast Cancer Awareness Month: the Mnemesia icon turns pink for October.
• Flashcard review: at the start of each session, choose shuffled or in course order. An imported deck keeps the order of its file.
• One planner: your device calendars (personal, school, Google or Outlook accounts added in Settings) appear in the Mnemesia planner, and your sessions appear in a "Mnemesia" calendar in the Calendar app. A session moved in Calendar is picked up by Mnemesia.
• J-method: reorder the J of a day by dragging them.
• MCQs: your tests are saved as files in the Mnemesia folder, like decks, and the ones you drop there are read when you sync.
1.0.11 Oct 5
New
• J-method: a break for holidays (the J falling inside it resume afterwards), review rounds covering a whole subject between two dates, extra rereads that shift nothing, and a note on each J.
• The score of the course's tests taken on the day of a J shows on its card. The Year view lays out the whole academic year, subject by subject.
• Multiple-choice tests: the EDN formats arrive, with script concordance tests, image hotspots, progressive clinical cases, key-feature problems and critical article reading. A test can also be taken in part only.
• On a course, the "Review" button opens its cards and tests next to it, without closing it.
• "My work" shows at a glance the course's cards, its tests with their latest score, its J, its mistakes and its documents.
• Subjects can be grouped by module, the exam date is set with the subject, and a year picker hides the other years.
• EDN items: statistics of checked items, and a color per item, picked from its number.
• On iPhone, the planner is the home screen, and the month and year read like Calendar.
1.0.10 Oct 4
New
• Multiple-choice tests: everything is set when you start. Select "Start" and a sheet offers the answers (at the end or after each question), the timer, the scoring (EDN or points) and option shuffling. The editor is now just for writing the exam.
• An exam you leave halfway can be resumed where you stopped, or started over from the first question.
• Options are shuffled on every attempt, so you remember the answer rather than its position. A setting keeps the written order.
• For medical students, exams are scored as in the EDN by default, including those received from a classmate.
• Flashcards: a forgotten card comes back the same day, due dates are counted in days, and stubborn cards are flagged.
• Free colors for the pencil, the highlighter and subjects, with the system color picker and an eyedropper that picks a color from your handout.
• Windows and alerts reviewed: deleting always asks first, Escape closes, and the keyboard stays in the open window.
• iCloud: a device still on an older version keeps receiving what the others send, and catches up on the rest once updated.
1.0.9 Oct 3
New
• Mnemesia comes to iPhone. Review your cards, take your multiple-choice tests and check your planner there, with the same data as on your iPad and Mac through iCloud.
• EDN items (for medical students in France): a new Items tab sorts the 367 items of the national ranking exam into their 37 specialties. Track your progress overall and by specialty. Each item can get a color tag, which then colors its cards and sessions in the planner.
• Multiple-choice tests: three tabs, Take, History and Edit. History is sorted by subject and shows the average out of 20, the best mark and the progress. Every answer sheet shows its mark out of 20, whatever the scoring.
• Multiple-choice tests: change the scoring of an answer sheet after the fact (standard or EDN), with a preview of the mark before you apply it.
• Multiple-choice tests: a Shuffle button in the editor draws the question order at random and keeps each clinical case in one block. The arrow keys move from one question to the next.
• Shared tests now carry their scoring with them.
• Archive: archive a subject or a whole semester. Archived subjects leave reviews, the dashboard and the planner. In list view, each subject has its own Archive and Delete buttons.
• Planner: J-days waiting to be placed sit in the side rail. A J-day already placed can be moved and resized.
• J-method: the bubble of a J-day shows the rating you gave, lets you change it, tells you how it moves the next date, and lets you uncheck the J-day in place.
• Decks: a deck filed in a group is suggested on every PDF of that group, best match first.
Fixes
• Cloze cards: every blank is blue on the front, and every answer is highlighted on the back.
• Workspace: highlighting no longer jumps back to the first PDF opened, and the tab arrow stays open after a click.
• J-method: a past J-day left unchecked is counted more accurately, either done on its date or overdue.
• My cards: large numbers ("2.1k") no longer wrap onto two lines.
• Larger, easier-to-read score badges.
• Older answer sheets no longer show a false discrepancy under EDN scoring.
