Real conversations, in context

Photograph a menu, a sign or a receipt and read it in your language. Or split the screen with someone and talk, with their half upside down so they can read it.
Better Translate requires a subscription or a one-time purchase. There is no free version, and every plan unlocks the whole app.
The screen splits in two. Your half faces you. Their half is turned upside down, so the person across the table reads it the right way up. Nobody passes the phone back and forth.
Hold your half and talk. Let go when you are done, and it shows up on their half in their language. They hold theirs to answer. Tap a half instead of holding it to type a name, an address or a number. Tap the speaker on a line to hear it read out.
Add a line about where you are before you start, like at a hotel or talking to the chef, and a word the transcriber got wrong is more likely to come back right.
The camera reads any photo with text in it: a menu, a sign, a label, a list of ingredients, a receipt, a document. It works out what it is looking at, then translates the text into your language and keeps the original in place, so you can point at it. Pick a photo from your library if you already took one.
Nineteen languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Cantonese, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, Indonesian, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Marathi and Vietnamese.
What leaves your phone
Speech is turned into text on your phone, and the audio never leaves it. Photos are read on your phone too, and on a fast connection the photo goes with its text, because a page is translated more accurately from the photo itself. What is sent goes first to our server, then to OpenAI to be translated. There are no accounts and no login.
If you turn on Where you are in Settings, the name of the town you are in goes along with what you say, so a place name the transcriber misheard can be put back. It is off until you turn it on, and your position is never sent.
Pricing (purchase required)
Better Translate cannot be used without one of these purchases. Every plan unlocks the whole app.
- $0.99 a week
- $23.99 a year
- $99.99 once, for lifetime access
The weekly and yearly plans are auto-renewable subscriptions. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
