Jou is our history, one day at a time. Every morning it opens on today. You get the entries that belong to this date, drawn from thousands of them, reaching from the Taíno settlements before the ships to the present. Each one is written to be read in ten seconds or in two minutes, whichever you have: a headline, why it matters today, then the detail if you want it. We wrote it the way we would tell it to each other. Our ancestors are the ones acting. The people who claimed to own them are named for what they were. When a law was passed to stop something, we say what our people were already doing that made the law necessary. THE NOTICES Alongside the day's history sits something else. When someone escaped, the enslavers of Saint-Domingue paid the newspapers to hunt them. There are 10,412 of those notices, advertising 13,711 of our ancestors. A notice is what an enslaver pays for after the searching has already failed. So every one of them marks somebody who had got out. Where a notice recorded a name, Jou gives it back: Polidor, Marianne, l'Espérance, Sans-Quartier. Where it recorded only a brand and no name, Jou counts that person too, and says so. WHAT IS INSIDE - Thousands of entries, every day of the year covered - A brief on each one: the headline, why it matters today, what happened, and the thread - Sources cited on every entry, one tap down - A glossary that explains the colony's vocabulary and who it served - Browse by century, by year, by month, or search the whole archive - Subscribe the calendar to your phone - A daily notification at a time you choose - Works completely offline after the first download NOTHING COLLECTED No account. No tracking. No analytics. The archive lives on your phone and stays there. Jou is drawn from Istwanou and from the marronnage.info archive of notices, and is part of Rasanblaj Media Group. Jou Yearly is an auto-renewable subscription: free for the first week, then $9.99 per year. It renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings. Past buyers of Jou keep full access without a subscription. Terms of Use: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/ Privacy Policy: https://jou.rasanblaj.ht/privacy
