Tonight's night is dealt at midnight and shared by every player. Forge a hero, roll twelve hours of d20s, and see whether the dawn or the epitaph comes first.
Smolder is a solo role-playing story you can finish in one sitting. Each day the calendar seeds a single night: one genre out of six, an opening hook, twelve scene templates and three threats. Everyone who opens the app that day faces the same night. Only the dice are yours.
You begin by forging a hero in three steps: a name, one of six archetypes, and one trait that bends the rules. Then the night starts. Every hour shows a scene and three ways through it, each tied to Might, Wits or Nerve and each with its own difficulty. Pick one, roll a d20, and the app resolves the result: a natural twenty is a Critical, meeting the number is a Success, falling just short is a Partial, and anything worse costs Grit. Spend an Ember to Kindle a roll before it lands or Stoke it after. Once per act you can Hold the Line instead of rolling, buying Grit now for a harder hour later. When Grit reaches zero the hero falls. When the twelfth hour ends, the hero has seen the dawn.
What you can do:
- Play the daily night, the same one every other player gets, with real random rolls on top of a fixed structure
- Choose from six worlds: dark fantasy, orbital horror, folk horror, noir, western and a grim winter fairy tale
- Build heroes from six archetypes and six traits, and carry up to three one-use relics with exact rules
- Read every hour's ledger afterwards: the roll, the modifier, the tier, what it cost and what it earned
- Keep every hero in the Hall of Ashes with a title and four-line epitaph, pinned, exported as text or forgotten
- Run Trials with your own seed text, so a friend can play the exact night you played
- Take on four preset gauntlets, including a week-long program where one hero carries Grit and relics from night to night
- Try Endless mode, where dawn never comes and every twelfth hour brings a Last Stand
- Uncover thirty-six threats, twenty-four relics, six archetypes and six genres in a Codex that opens as you meet them
- Track a daily streak with a weekly Grace Day, climb from Cinder to Inferno, and collect twenty-one badges
- Turn on optional AI narration, which writes the prose of each scene around numbers the app has already decided, or play entirely offline with the built-in scene bank
Smolder needs no account and keeps every record in the app's private storage on your device. The dice, the rules and the scoring are all computed locally. AI narration is off until you turn it on, and when it is on, only the current scene's story material is sent.
Smolder is a work of interactive fiction. Every scene is invented; nothing in it is advice for the real world.
