Switchover Snip
Win+Shift+S screen capture
Only for Mac
Free
Mac
Control+Option+Shift+S, drag, done. Snip a region, a window or the screen, mark it up, pin it on top, or copy the text out of it. Your Snipping Tool reflex, kept.
Reaching for Win+Shift+S out of habit? Switchover Snip is the Snipping Tool you're used to, rebuilt for the Mac.
CAPTURE ANYTHING
Snip a region, a single window, or the whole screen. The capture opens straight into an editor, ready to mark up.
MARK IT UP
Arrows, rectangles, freehand pen, highlighter, text labels and a pixelate tool for blurring out anything private — everything you'd expect from a proper annotation editor.
PIN IT TO THE SCREEN
Turn any capture into a small floating window that stays on top, so you can keep a reference visible while you work in another app.
COPY THE TEXT, NOT JUST THE PICTURE
"Copy Text" reads the words in your capture with on-device text recognition and puts them straight on the clipboard — no picture, just the text.
Every capture can be saved, copied or dragged straight into another app.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Switchover Snip has no network access and collects nothing. Captures stay on your Mac unless you choose to save or share them, and text recognition happens entirely on-device.

Fixes a bug that stopped "Save…" from working. If you tried to save a snip and nothing happened, this is why, and it is sorted. Sorry about that.
Also new:
• Save as PDF, HEIC or TIFF as well as PNG and JPEG. HEIC files are about a quarter the size of a PNG; PDF gives you a one-page document for printing or attaching.
• Pick the format as you save. There is a Format menu in the save dialog, and the arrow beside Save goes straight to "Save as PDF…", "Save as PNG…" and so on. Settings still holds your usual choice; picking here changes just that one save.
• A settings button in the editor toolbar, so you can change your default format, the JPEG quality or your auto-save folder without going back to the menu bar.
• The highlighter now uses the colour you pick, instead of always being yellow.
• The toolbar explains itself. Hover any tool for what it does, and the colour and size controls now say which tool they are affecting.
• Icons throughout the menu bar menu.
Also fixed:
• Settings could open behind the editor window, so clicking the gear looked like it did nothing.
• The colour picker could slip behind the editor as soon as you clicked back on your snip.
• Toolbar buttons could appear as blank rectangles when the editor window was small.
As always: no account, no network access, nothing collected.
