Your iPhone measures how close you are to the car ahead, in seconds, in real time and on-device. Nothing is recorded. Nothing is uploaded. Nothing leaves your phone.
Everyone knows the two-second rule. Almost nobody can actually measure it.
GapMeter uses your iPhone's rear camera to show, in seconds, how far you are behind the vehicle ahead, and tells you with a sound when that gap is closing fast. Mount your phone, tap Start, and drive. You don't need to look at the screen.
HOW IT WORKS
• Mount your iPhone on the dashboard or an air vent, rear camera facing the road.
• A one-minute guided setup levels the mount and learns your vehicle.
• Tap START. GapMeter finds the vehicle in your lane and shows your following time in seconds, with the distance and your speed.
• When you are closing in quickly, an alert tone plays over your music or your car's speakers without interrupting navigation.
• When you stop, you get a clear summary of the drive.
A LIVE DASHCAM VIEW
• Camera view: the live road, a bracket and distance on every vehicle GapMeter tracks, and a path to the car in your lane that turns green, amber or red with your gap.
• Road view: a clean drawn lane with the vehicles around you and their distances, for a calmer screen at night.
• Time gap, distance and speed stay at the top, with a banner: "Safe following distance", "Following close" or "Closing fast".
SECONDS, NOT METERS
"100 feet" means nothing without speed. "1.4 s" is instantly clear at any speed. GapMeter shows your gap the way driving instructors teach it.
HONEST WHEN IT ISN'T SURE
Darkness, glare, rain, a tunnel, a moved phone: GapMeter tells you which problem it has. It shows a ± band when less certain, and switches to Close / Moderate / Clear when a number wouldn't be trustworthy. It never shows a confident number it doesn't believe.
A MIRROR, NOT A NAG
• Quiet by default: the "getting close" signal is visual only. Sound is reserved for a gap that is closing fast, and is rate-limited.
• After each drive: your median gap, its distribution, time below your chosen threshold, and how much of the drive was measured reliably.
• History and weekly trends show whether your habits are changing.
• No scores, no grades, no leaderboards.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
• Everything runs on your iPhone or iPad.
• No account. No cloud. No recording.
• No analytics, ads, trackers or third-party code.
• Your location is used only to read your speed; GapMeter never reads or stores where you are.
• Deleting the app deletes everything.
